The traditional values of Vietnamese families are the crystallization of family culture and national culture, governing the perception and behavior of each member, laying the foundation for the development of the family in the present and the future. The treasure of proverbs, folk songs and folk songs of the nation has many sentences that summarize traditional family values: "Father's merit is like Thai Son mountain. Mother's love is like water flowing from the source. Wholeheartedly worship mother and respect father. Fulfilling filial piety is the duty of a child"; "Even torn paper must keep its edges"; "Starve to be clean, torn to be fragrant"...
Precious traditional values such as patriotism, love for the homeland, love and mutual support, loyalty, filial piety, studiousness, diligence and creativity in work, indomitability, resilience in overcoming all difficulties and challenges have been preserved and cultivated by Vietnamese families throughout the history of building and defending the nation and promoted in the present period. History has proven that once there is solidarity from within the family, clan to the whole people, a nation, no matter how small or weak, can still defeat the powerful foreign invaders.
Over the years, the Party and State have always emphasized the importance and implemented solutions to build, preserve and promote traditional the beauty of Vietnamese family
The Strategy for Vietnamese Family Development to 2020, with a vision to 2030, identifies: "Family is the cell of society, an important environment for forming, nurturing andeducating personality, preserving and promoting fine traditional culture, fighting social evils, and creating human resources to serve the cause of national construction and defense". Directive No. 06-CT/TW dated June 24, 2021 of the Secretariat "Strengthening the Party's leadership in family building in the new situation" affirms: "Building a happy family is the foundation for building a happy society, which is an extremely important issue for our nation. Family building is both a goal and a driving force for the country's sustainable development".
Over the years, the Party and State have always emphasized the importance and implemented solutions to build, preserve and promote the fine traditions of Vietnamese families.
However, the current downside of the market economy mechanism, the negative impact of cultural integration and diversity, etc. are threatening to "awaken" bad traits in many people, changing the good traditional values of Vietnamese families. From the perspective of scientists from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, preserving and promoting traditional values brings practical benefits to modern family life. It helps families avoid crisis when new values are forming and have not yet determined their place in modern life. The legacies of traditional families still have the effect of strengthening the sustainability of families, even in the context of modernization, industrialization, and labor migration.
In order to strengthen the family bond, our nation has many good customs and practices, promoting cultural values in spiritual life. The belief in ancestor worship and the mentality of "fallen leaves returning to their roots" are maintained and promoted by Vietnamese people. Each family and clan has an ancestral altar, each locality has a temple or communal house to worship famous people; the whole country has the Hung Temple Festival... These are all activities that contain a lot of meaning and the morality of "remembering the source when drinking water" still retains its value.
To preserve and promote the fine traditions of Vietnamese families, the cooperation of the entire political system is needed. The school system, from kindergarten to university; the cultural institution system from the grassroots to the central level... continue to promote propaganda, unify the content of educating traditional yet modern Vietnamese people, gradually forming good personalities and the ability to integrate for each citizen.
Authorities at all levels need to continuously care for economic development for poor households, so that families become a solid block, an important nucleus of society; a potential strength of the nation, a driving force to build and protect the country.
