On the night of May 24 and early morning of May 25, torrential rains suddenly poured down overnight, causing water to rise rapidly and flood into houses in the communes of Cam My, Cam Due, and Cam Thach. Many roads turned into rivers, with water nearly 1 meter deep, and even higher in some places. Flooding in the middle of summer is something that people in the flood-prone area of Cam Xuyen have never witnessed before. The rapid flow of water left many families unable to react. The flood swept away mud, trash, and even people's household items. Furniture was flooded, many livestock and poultry were swept away, hundreds of hectares of crops were flooded, and many tons of newly harvested rice that had not yet been placed high were submerged in water.

On the morning of May 25, the Military Command of Ha Tinh province mobilized 50 officers and soldiers of Regiment 841 to coordinate with forces of the Military Command of Cam Xuyen district and local militia and self-defense forces to carry out disaster recovery work, quickly arriving at heavily flooded areas, urgently supporting people in raising furniture, drying rice, and cleaning up after the flood.
Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Duc, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of Cam Xuyen District Military Command, who is directly in charge of the work to overcome the consequences of floods at deeply flooded areas, said: "During the night, when heavy rain poured down, we immediately activated the local forces, went to each house to help people raise their property and move their belongings out of the danger zone. This morning, when the water began to recede, we continued to mobilize 28 officers and soldiers on duty, coordinated with dozens of militiamen from the communes, divided into many groups to go to the villages to clear mud and soil, clear sewers, transport rice for drying, helping people gradually stabilize their lives after the flood."
It was pouring rain, the water rose quickly, people did not expect the flood to come in the middle of summer, many households were not able to react in time. Dozens of tons of newly harvested rice had not been stacked high yet but were submerged in flood water, facing the risk of serious damage if not handled promptly. Officers and soldiers of Regiment 841 quickly arrived at the flooded areas, urgently helping people transport the soaked rice to the drying area, saving the rice from the risk of germination and mold.

In the hot weather after the flood, soldiers did not hesitate to wade through the mud, carrying each heavy bag of rice. In My Dong village, Cam My commune, Mr. Phan Thanh Hung's family was one of the households that suffered heavy losses. More than 1 ton of newly harvested rice temporarily stored in the corner of the yard was submerged by floodwaters. Not only that, the 35m solid fence around his house was also collapsed by the water, many household items such as wooden cabinets, pots, blankets, etc. were soaked in water and buried in mud. Soldiers of Regiment 841 quickly arrived to support Mr. Hung's family, using shovels and hands to push away each layer of mud to put the bags of rice onto the truck, transport them to the concentrated drying yard, and then to the dryer.
“Thanks to the soldiers, my family was able to keep this rice. If we couldn’t dry it in a few days, we would have lost everything. This is the sweat and effort of the whole family,” Mr. Phan Thanh Hung emotionally shared.
In the communes of Cam My, Cam Thanh, Cam Due... the uniforms of soldiers stood out in the midst of the devastation. Some carried rice, some raked mud, some rebuilt collapsed fences... Everyone worked with a sense of urgency, dedication and responsibility.
The mid-summer flood is a rare weather phenomenon, posing many challenges to the local disaster prevention and control work. With the spirit of "being there when people need it", the armed forces of Ha Tinh province have done their best to help the people, contributing to minimizing damage, thereby strengthening the bond between the army and the people.
Heavy rain causes damage to property and crops in Ha Tinh Due to the impact of heavy rain that lasted all night on May 24 and lasted until the morning of May 25, localized flooding and flash floods occurred in Cam Xuyen district (Ha Tinh). The rainfall at Ke Go lake station was measured at 524.4mm. The water flow into the lake was also high, increasing pressure on downstream areas, especially the two communes of Cam My and Cam Due (Cam Xuyen district) located right at the foot of Ke Go lake. Floods from upstream poured in quickly, cutting off many roads. The Cam Due-Cam Thanh inter-commune road through the Cam Due People's Committee was flooded, causing isolation. In Cam My commune, the flood also rose very quickly, causing most of the area to be flooded, especially the four mountain villages of My Phu, My Dong, My Lam and My Ha with about 450 households affected. The water level in some places rose 0.5-1.5m, flooding into people's houses at night, leaving many people unable to respond. Many inter-family groups were surrounded by water, many properties such as newly harvested rice, poultry, and electronic devices were swept away or severely damaged. In particular, heavy rain caused flooding in some localities, greatly affecting the spring rice area in the fields as well as the amount of rice harvested at home. According to preliminary statistics from local authorities, heavy rain flooded 2,250 hectares of unharvested spring rice; 2,076 tons of harvested rice were wet; nearly 12,000 livestock and poultry were swept away by water, concentrated in communes of Cam Xuyen district, including: Cam My, Cam Due, Cam Quan, Cam Thach, Cam Ha, Cam Thinh, Cam Son, Cam Minh and Cam Xuyen town. In Thach Ha district of Ha Tinh province, heavy rain also caused a section of the Ha dam with a capacity of about 250,000m3 in Quy village (Thach Ngoc commune) to suddenly break. Local authorities are mobilizing forces to check weak points, reinforce the dike, and overcome the consequences. |
