In an interview with BBC on November 17, Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned that no business would be immune if the “AI bubble” bursts.
Mr. Pichai said the wave of investment in artificial intelligence (AI) is "irrational," even though this fever has contributed to the strong rise of technology stocks this year.
It was concerns about the risk of the "AI bubble" bursting that triggered a wave of sell-offs among investors, causing global stock markets to plummet in recent months.
According to the Google CEO, no company will be immune to the impact if the "AI bubble" bursts. "I don't think any company is immune, including us," he said.
The interview touched on many long-standing concerns about AI, such as energy demand (which could impact climate goals), the accuracy of the technology, and its impact on the labor market.
Mr. Pichai warned that the energy demand for AI is “huge” and according to calculations by the International Energy Agency (IEA), last year, this sector accounted for 1.5% of total global electricity consumption.
The computing footprint of AI could reach 200 gigawatts by 2030, equivalent to Brazil's annual electricity consumption.
Geopolitical tensions have helped fuel a race to build massive data centers housing tens of thousands of chips, requiring massive power supplies and extensive cooling systems.
Countries need to take action to develop new energy sources and strengthen infrastructure, Pichai said. For Google in particular, the energy needs of AI could cause Alphabet to fall behind its climate goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
Regarding the labor market, this CEO made it clear that AI will cause “social disruption,” possibly even replacing important positions like the one he holds and forcing “everyone to adapt.”
Those who know how to apply AI will have an advantage, whether they are teachers or doctors, which are professions that are always needed.
Alphabet just recorded its first-quarter revenue exceeding $100 billion thanks to its ability to take advantage of the AI wave. The group is increasing spending on AI infrastructure and accelerating the deployment of AI features on Google Search and Gemini models./.
