Google proposes solution to keep Chrome
Specifically, Google wants to adjust its agreements with Apple and other partners on setting the default search engine on new devices. The company believes that these agreements, which give Google a huge advantage over its rivals, need to be adjusted to ensure competitiveness.
Google is currently proposing changes like:
- Allow Android manufacturers to freely choose the default search engine.
- Separate the Play Store app store from Chrome and search on Android.
- Allows browser developers to review Google as the default search engine annually.
However, Google did not agree to end its revenue-sharing agreements with partners, which are a huge source of revenue for Apple and independent browser developers.
Google’s proposal has been criticized by rivals who say it’s a way to maintain the status quo, while the Justice Department wants more drastic measures, such as forcing the search giant to sell Chrome and Android.
The legal battle is expected to last until 2025, with the next hearing taking place in April 2025.
