Durian price news today 05/20/2025
The durian market continues to have remarkable developments, especially in the context of Malaysia increasing exports, challenging Vietnam's position in the international market. While durian prices in Vietnam's domestic market remain stable, Malaysia is strongly expanding its market share in China.
According to the South China Morning Post, Malaysian durian growers are expecting a 30% increase in exports this year, thanks to growing demand from Chinese consumers for fresh, tree-ripened durians. The strength of Malaysian durians lies in their unique harvesting method: the fruit is left to ripen naturally on the tree and then airlifted to China within 48 hours. This helps Malaysian durians win over high-end customers who love the natural flavor and rich sweetness.
Major distributors such as Joy Wing Mau and Dole Asia Holdings have reported that Malaysia’s durian market share in China has increased tenfold in just the past year, although specific figures have not been released. This rise has put great pressure on both Thailand and Vietnam – the two main countries in the durian export industry today.
In particular, if Vietnam fails to improve its logistics, quarantine procedures, and increase the rate of durians meeting export standards, its competitiveness in the international market will be threatened. Meanwhile, domestic durian prices remain stable, but producers need to quickly adjust their strategies to maintain their position in the increasingly competitive environment.
