The world's largest search engine is planning to change the look of its website. Specifically, the AI Mode feature will replace the "I'm Feeling Lucky" widget right below the search bar, next to the "Google Search" button.

While not yet widely available, the feature is placed in a location on the interface that CNBC calls “Google’s most valuable real estate,” indicating that the company is serious about integrating AI into the core search experience, amid competitive pressure in the AI-driven search space.

The feature began rolling out to some users over the past week, a Google spokesperson confirmed. The spokesperson also said the company is testing the new feature through “Labs,” a testing unit for users who sign up for a trial. However, not all features will be rolled out officially.

Investors in Alphabet, Google’s parent company, have raised concerns since ChatGPT launched in November 2022. They believe OpenAI could gain market share in search by giving users new ways to look up information online.

In October 2024, OpenAI launched “ChatGPT Search,” putting itself in more direct competition with search engines like Google, Bing, and Perplexity. Microsoft has invested nearly $14 billion in OpenAI, but ChatGPT competes directly with its own AI and search engines, like Copilot and Bing.

Meanwhile, Gemini, Alphabet’s flagship AI product, has shown performance on par or outperforming its top competitors. According to an internal analysis, Gemini AI now has about 35 million daily active users, compared to ChatGPT’s estimated 160 million.

According to Statcounter , Google's global search traffic share has declined by about 2% year-on-year, from 93% in March 2023 to 89.71% in the same period in 2025. Apple's senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, said on May 7 that Google searches via the Safari browser saw their first-ever decline in April.

Commenting on this, veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that it is a mistake to think that generative AI will not affect Google's advertising business. "Generative AI service providers have not yet deployed advertising, so Google Ads is still the best choice," Kuo wrote.

As first reported by CNBC , Google has been testing internal homepage designs since 2023. One potential design at the time included displaying five question suggestions below the main search bar, replacing the current “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. Google is also testing a small chat icon to the right of the search bar.

In March, Google announced that it would begin testing AI Mode with a select group of users. However, the initial description said the feature would be tested on the search results page, not the homepage. The company called it an experiment to provide “advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimedia processing to help you answer even the toughest questions.”
