Father and son suffocated in car discharged from hospital

VnExpressVnExpress06/06/2023

A father and son in An Lao, Hai Phong , who suffocated after falling asleep in a car are no longer in critical condition and are in stable health. They are expected to be discharged from the hospital today.

On June 6, Dr. Le Lan Phuong, in charge of the Intensive Care Center, 108 Military Central Hospital, said that the two patients were transferred in a state of respiratory failure, circulatory collapse, and had to be put on a ventilator. After more than a day of intensive care, the health of the father and son improved, they were conscious, the endotracheal tube was removed, and vasopressors were stopped.

Currently, both are in stable health and are expected to be discharged today.

On the evening of June 1, a father and his three children in Truong Son town, An Lao district, got into their car, turned on the air conditioner and slept due to a power outage. At 3am the next morning, the wife went down to check on her husband and children and found them unconscious, so she took them to Kien An Hospital for emergency treatment. The 20-year-old girl died of cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. The father and 15-year-old daughter received first aid and were then transferred to Hanoi .

According to Dr. Phuong, when turning on the car air conditioner to sleep, in a closed condition, it will produce a large amount of CO and CO2 gas into the surrounding environment. This gas continues to be sucked in by the air conditioner, causing the person sleeping inside to suffocate, leading to loss of consciousness, coma and death if not treated promptly.

If you keep the car doors closed while the car is stopped for too long, especially in hot weather, it can cause the car to run out of fuel and stop working, especially when the air conditioning is on. At that time, the air inside the car will not be able to exchange with the outside, and the temperature will increase, causing people in the car to lack oxygen, suffer heat stroke, and even die.

Doctors recommend that when discovering a person in a coma in a car (suspected of suffocation), the victim should be quickly taken to an open area, assisted breathing or artificial respiration, and immediately transferred to the nearest medical facility.

"The chance of survival of a victim of asphyxiation depends on the time of arrival at the hospital," the doctor said.
