The new tunnel is part of Beijing's Eastern Sixth Ring Road project. The deepest part of the project is 75 meters underground, making it the deepest tunnel in Beijing. It is also China's longest shield-cut highway tunnel.
Shield tunneling is a trenchless technique in which a shield tunneling machine is used to cut through the ground, creating a borehole while also providing a shield during excavation. The tunneling machine used in the new project is the largest in diameter developed in China. Specifically, the machine has a digging diameter of 16.07 m, a length of about 145 m, and a weight of 4,500 tons, and was independently designed and manufactured by Chinese enterprises.
The tunnel is 7.4 kilometers long and includes a six-lane two-way highway in the middle, a smoke vent in the upper level, and evacuation and rescue routes in the lower level, according to the Beijing Capital Expressway Development Group, which is implementing the project. The western section of the tunnel was completed in June, while the eastern section was completed on August 21.
The new tunnel project helps create more space above ground to promote industrial development and planning of large parks, contributing to the development of Beijing's Tongzhou District, and developing transportation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
