According to foreign media, the strikes caused more than 580 flights to be canceled and affected the schedules of 90,000 passengers.
Strikes organized by Verdi, Germany's second-largest union, have severely affected operations at Hamburg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Cologne and Berlin airports, the German Airports Association (ADV) said.
In addition to security personnel, flight crews of German airline Lufthansa also went on strike for two days, March 12-13, at Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt, and Munich airport.
The wave is set to continue as security staff at other airports such as Hanover, Dortmund, Weeze, Dresden, Leipzig and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden have announced their intention to strike on March 15.
In response to the situation, the main airport in the capital Berlin has announced the cancellation of all departing flights due to the strike expected to last, and warned passengers that flights to the airport may also be affected.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne/Bonn airport had to cancel at least 61 scheduled departures and 31 arrivals due to the strike, and advised passengers to check their flight status online before arriving at the airport.
In a statement, ADV CEO Ralph Beisel said the strikes had "damaged" the image and caused economic losses for Germany, which is known as a business and tourist destination.
Verdi, which represents some 25,000 security personnel nationwide, now wants to “increase pressure on employers ahead of the next round of negotiations to reach an agreement on improving working conditions”.
Specifically, Verdi is demanding a pay increase of 2.80 euros ($3.05) per hour as well as an overtime bonus for all overtime hours. However, five rounds of negotiations with the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) have not yielded results.
According to BDLS, employers have proposed an increase of 2.70 euros per hour to be implemented in three stages, which will increase the salary of aviation security officers to 432-470 euros per month.
It is expected that the next round of negotiations between Verdi and BDLS will resume next week./.
