BMD uses continuous GPS data to monitor and map traffic congestion levels on all Belgian roads. The tool not only identifies severe congestion, but also calculates areas where traffic speeds are significantly slower than normal.
Figures from BMD show that in 2024, each worker in Belgium will lose an average of 6 minutes and 35 seconds per day in traffic jams, equivalent to 40 hours per year, an increase of 1% compared to 2023.
Not only is traffic congestion a nuisance for commuters, it also has a serious impact on the road transport sector, which accounts for 59% of total traffic congestion-related losses. Delayed deliveries and increased operating costs are also significant consequences for transport businesses.
October was the month with the highest economic cost, with total congestion costs reaching €549 million, followed by November with €518 million and September with €502 million.
In terms of traffic jam length, January recorded the longest jams, with an average of 1,544 km of traffic jams per day, followed by November (1,497 km) and October (1,453 km). The worst traffic day of the year was recorded on 17 January 2024, when a heavy snowfall at 5pm caused record traffic jams on Belgian roads, with a total of 8,280 km of jams.
The prolonged traffic congestion is not only a nuisance for the people but also a major challenge for the Belgian economy. Experts emphasize that investing in public transport, optimizing existing routes and encouraging people to use “green” means of transport will be necessary solutions in the future to minimize the damage caused by traffic congestion.
The Belgian government is also considering measures to improve transport infrastructure and promote the use of smart vehicles to reduce congestion, ensuring sustainable economic development in the coming years.
