Heavy rains caused landslides in many irrigation works in Duy Xuyen commune, typically in the Dam Bau bridge embankment area, more than 60m of erosion, about 850m3 of soil was washed away, affecting more than 6 hectares of rice of people in Trung Dong village.

It is worth mentioning that nearly 5,000 cubic meters of soil filled both sides of the field, making it impossible for people to produce, and risking the crop being abandoned. More seriously, the landslide point encroached deep into the bank, less than 3 meters away from "eating" the 220V high voltage pole.

Meanwhile, the 1.5km long Minh Khanh irrigation canal (An Hoa village) has 5 landslides with a total length of 37m, sweeping away 288m3 of soil. This situation affects more than 30ha of rice and crops of the people, threatening the irrigation water source for the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop.

Mr. Nguyen Bao, Director of Duy Trung 1 Agricultural Cooperative, said: “This is the first time Minh Khanh canal has suffered such severe erosion. If not repaired promptly, it will affect the agricultural production of 120 households.”

Similarly, Dong Quang dam (Chiem Son Dong village) suffered a landslide of more than 15m. This is an important irrigation project, serving irrigating 60ha of rice and crops in two villages, Chiem Son Dong and Tra Kieu Tay.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Sau, Deputy Director of Duy Son Cooperative, from 2020 to now, Dong Quang dam has collapsed 3 times. The locality has temporarily reinforced the degraded areas with compacted soil and poured concrete. In the long term, it needs funding for repairs to ensure irrigation water for people's production.

Not only irrigation works, many traffic routes in the commune were also eroded, making it difficult for people to travel. In Chanh Loc and Hoa Lam villages, many landslides were recorded, affecting people's travel.

Mr. Le Dinh Xi, Director of Duy Trung 2 Cooperative, said that many irrigation works and traffic roads are currently damaged, significantly affecting people's lives and production. He hopes that the authorities will soon fix the problem.

According to statistics, the historic flood at the end of October caused more than 41.5 billion VND in damage in Duy Xuyen commune. Of which, the damage to the irrigation system, pumping stations, canals, embankments was more than 5.6 billion VND; damage to roads, slopes, bridge abutments, anti-erosion embankments... was more than 3.7 billion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Cong, Vice Chairman of Duy Xuyen Commune People's Committee, said that the city has provided 4 billion VND to the locality to implement urgent projects. Based on this funding source, the commune prioritizes overcoming serious landslides, ensuring smooth traffic; repairing irrigation systems for winter-spring crop production...

“The locality recommends that the Central Government and the city continue to pay attention and provide additional funding so that the commune can proactively and thoroughly handle damaged areas, quickly stabilize people's lives, and restore production after natural disasters,” said Mr. Cong.
