The effectiveness of digital capacity building for teachers

From training courses, digital transformation training, and artificial intelligence (AI) application, teachers in the city flexibly apply technological knowledge and skills into practical lessons and professional activities, creating excitement for students and increasing the effectiveness of class hours.

Teachers master technology

As one of the teachers of Information Technology and Technology at Duy Trung Primary School (Duy Xuyen commune), Ms. Pham Thi Diem clearly understands the importance of applying technology and AI in lesson design to serve teaching and learning activities.

Ms. Diem said that applying AI and information technology helps diversify teaching methods, personalize learning for each student, and reduce the workload for teachers in lesson preparation, grading and assessment. Therefore, improving teachers' digital capacity and integrating AI into teaching is an urgent task to meet the current requirements of educational innovation.

After the course on applying AI to lesson design organized by the school, Ms. Diem boldly applied it to teaching Information Technology and Technology. Specifically, she used Chatgpt to build a complete lesson plan, suitable for the reality of students at the school. She used the Gamma tool to design presentations, creating beautiful, professional slides.

“Using AI helps teachers quickly create images, create mind maps to reinforce lessons, turn exercises into interactive games, and convert dry content and images in textbooks into vivid videos . This makes the lesson more exciting and students more interested in learning. Thanks to AI, the lesson is no longer simply “teachers teach - students listen”, but becomes a real technology discovery session”, Ms. Diem shared.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Head of the History - Geography Group, Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Hai Chau Ward) said that through training courses organized by the school, teachers have more foundation to learn more about applying AI in teaching, testing, evaluation, record management... Applying AI in teaching activities needs to be selective to use appropriately with the teacher's ability and the characteristics of the subject.

For example, with History, teachers can use virtual reality tours of museums that have digitized artifacts. Or with Geography, teachers can take students to any location in the world with just the Google Earth application...

According to Mr. Tuan, applying technology and AI in lectures and organizing teaching and learning activities also requires time for teachers to select. Teachers must master technology to be able to orient digital capacity for students as well as equip them with the ability to self-study, using AI as a tool to support learning and not completely depend on it.

Overcoming barriers

In addition to having the knowledge and skills to avoid abuse and dependence on AI, teachers also encounter some difficulties when applying it. According to Ms. Pham Thi Diem, some software or platforms limit free features, extend the number of uses, and require registration or payment to use fully; school equipment does not meet actual needs. The information provided by AI is sometimes not suitable for the actual classroom and students at the school...

Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Mai Thi Thu Ha, a teacher at Duy Tan High School (Tam Ky Ward), said that currently, most teachers are using free AI derivative applications, with limited time and features for using the tool. However, not all teachers can afford to buy copyrighted software.

Through the process of teaching and working with teachers at all levels, MSc. Le Vu, Director of the Center for Learning Resources and Communication, lecturer of Information Technology, University of Technical Education (University of Danang) realized that teachers all want to access and master AI tools to serve teaching. AI helps lectures become vivid, intuitive, saves time preparing lessons, so that teachers can invest more in content quality and pedagogical methods.

However, according to Master Le Vu, the biggest barrier today is not technology, but psychology and professional habits. Many teachers, especially those who rarely use technology, are still confused and hesitant about new tools.

Another obstacle is that most AI tools charge for advanced features, making access difficult. Therefore, Vietnam needs to build a national digital learning platform and a shared educational data warehouse to apply AI effectively and sustainably.

It can be said that the application of AI in schools is in an exciting acceleration phase, with increasingly specific and extensive steps. In particular, after Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW of the Politburo was issued, the spirit of innovation, creativity, and digital transformation in education has spread strongly.

“AI can never replace the role of teachers, but AI helps teachers have more time to care, share and inspire students, in line with the spirit emphasized in Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW: “Students are the center and subject of the education and training process; schools are the foundation, teachers are the driving force, deciding the quality of education and training”, shared MSc. Le Vu.

Notes when using AI

According to Ms. Pham Thi Diem, the application of artificial intelligence is used to support teaching activities, not to replace the role of teachers. Teachers need to verify and re-verify the content created by AI according to other sources such as books, newspapers, their own knowledge, etc.; ensure the safety of students' personal information. Take advantage of AI to encourage creativity and personalized learning; do not overuse AI because it reduces the thinking and creativity of both teachers and students.
