Principal of Pedagogy: 'It's boring for 18-year-old students to be depressed and complain about poverty'

Professor Nguyen Van Minh advises students to think of smart ways to solve problems and take action when faced with difficulties, instead of being depressed and complaining about poverty both online and in real life.

On the afternoon of October 11, in his last opening speech as principal of Hanoi National University of Education, Professor Nguyen Van Minh gave many words of advice to students.

Mr. Minh said that students currently have many concerns and worries such as poverty, the difficulties of the teaching profession, and the strict requirements for human resources. He sees many people complaining, both in real life and online, even sowing their sadness and pessimism into the hearts of others. According to Mr. Minh, this is not right.

"What would you gain by just sitting around complaining and being a keyboard warrior? Would it help reduce poverty at all? Why not think and do something better, at least something that is beneficial to yourself?" Mr. Minh said.

According to him, at the age of 18 or 20, if you just sit around sulking, complaining about poverty and hardship, it is "so boring". Although you cannot deny reality, students should not sit around waiting for "three wishes in a fairy tale" but should think of smart ways and take action.

"Poverty is not cowardice. We must consider our own poverty, that of our family, our homeland and our country as a pain to find a way to become rich in a legitimate way. And the clearest way is to study andeducate so that everyone knows what to do," Mr. Minh shared.

Particularly for the 4,000 new students of K73, the Principal of Hanoi National University of Education emphasized that university is not just about studying for exams and getting high scores, but also about learning how to propose, solve problems, and learn effective working methods.

"The question of what to study for must always be present in each student," said Mr. Minh, advising students to abandon the traditional way of studying and instead self-study combined with research.

In his 25-minute speech, Mr. Minh also mentioned many lessons about honesty, equality, kindness, love and compassion.

The second time hearing Professor Minh speak at the opening ceremony, Thanh Tung, a student majoring in Physics Education, shared the principal's speech as a lecture with many necessary advices for all Pedagogy students.

"Every word in your speech made me think. It is also the motivation for me to strive to become a good teacher in the future," Tung shared.

Professor Nguyen Van Minh, 60 years old, from Quang Tri , was a physics teacher before becoming principal of Hanoi Pedagogical University in 2013. He said that after completing his two terms as principal at the end of this year, he will return to teaching.
