According to FFF regulations, coaches working in the French fifth division need at least a DES (state higher coaching) diploma. Pau B coach Benjamin Bertrand is only 30 years old. The former goalkeeper retired early in the middle of last year to pursue a coaching career.
Benjamin Bertrand is currently studying for his DES training course but has not yet graduated. This means he is not eligible to coach in the French fifth division.
The Pau club leadership was aware of this and tried to “circumvent the law”. They put coach Laurent Strzelczak - who had a DES degree - on the coaching staff to replace Bertrand, even though he was not the one directly in charge on the field. In the matches that took place in May, Strzelczak answered the press conference instead of Bertrand.
Bertrand is the coach who regularly works with Nguyen Quang Hai in France. The Vietnamese midfielder has been dropped from Pau FC's first team by coach Didier Tholot for 8 consecutive Ligue 2 matches and has been forced to play for the reserve team.
If Pau B are found to have breached the rules by the FFF Regulations Committee, they will be heavily penalised, including points deductions and fines. Elsewhere in the French fifth division, the reserve teams of OGC Nice and AS Nancy-Lorraine have been docked six and three points respectively after employing coaches who do not have the required qualifications.
In addition to Pau B, Libourne, Stade Montois, Neuville were accused by other clubs in the French 5th division, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, led by FC Portes Entre-Deux-Mers, of violating the league's regulations. Specifically, these clubs were accused of using coaches without professional qualifications.
