Late last year, coach Kim Sang Sik led the Vietnamese team to win the 2024 ASEAN Cup with a 5-3 aggregate victory over Thailand after two final matches.
Less than 8 months later, coach Kim Sang Sik showed his cool hand when he brought U23 Vietnam to the championship of the U23 Southeast Asian Championship after a 1-0 victory over Indonesia in the final.
It is worth mentioning that U23 Vietnam won the tournament with a perfect record.
With this championship, Coach Kim Sang Sik made history in Southeast Asian football as he became the first coach to win the two highest levels of regional football: the national team and U23.
In 2005, Thailand under the leadership of coach Chanwit won the first Southeast Asian U23 Championship. Mr. Charnwit Polcheewin also led the Thai team but did not have the opportunity to win the Southeast Asian Championship.
In 2019, Indonesia won the Southeast Asian U23 Championship under coach Indra Sjafri, but this strategist has never been in charge of the national team. In the last two tournaments, U23 Vietnam was the champion with coaches Dinh The Nam (2022) and Hoang Anh Tuan (2023). Both of them have never had the opportunity to sit in the head coach position of the Vietnam team.
The victory of U23 Vietnam at the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship gives coach Kim Sang Sik and his team more strength to aim for the 2026 Asian U23 Championship qualifiers next September and especially the SEA Games at the end of this year in Thailand.
