Coach Michala Probierza leaves Polish team after conflict with Lewandowski

Earlier this week, Robert Lewandowski made a surprise announcement that he would never play for Poland again if coach Michala Probierz remained in charge. On his personal page, the Barca star said he had “lost faith in the national team coach”.

The relationship between the two sides completely broke down after coach Michala Probierza decided to strip Lewandowski of the captaincy. According to Polish media, Lewandowski has been causing trouble in the Polish dressing room for a long time. In March, the striker sat on the bench in the 0-2 win over Malta because he was not fit enough, but his teammates said he wanted to save his energy for Barca. Notably, Lewandowski did not play but criticized the coaching staff and teammates after the difficult performance against Malta.

On the other hand, coach Michala Probierz said he stripped Lewandowski of the captaincy for the “good of the team”. The 52-year-old coach has led the Polish team since September 2023 and received the support of the Federation. However, he quickly fell into a “dilemma” when Poland lost 1-2 to Finland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In a group that also includes the Netherlands, Poland is at risk of losing its play-off spot. This is probably one of the main reasons why coach Michala Probierz decided to resign, in addition to the scandal with Lewandowski.

In a statement from the Polish Football Federation, coach Michala Probierz said: “In the current situation, I think the best decision for the good of the Polish national team is to resign as head coach. This is my dream job and the greatest honor of my life, but the time has come for me to stop.”

The Polish national team will have 3 months to search for a new coach before returning to training in September this year. However, the future of Robert Lewandowski at the "White Eagles" is still a big question mark. Some experts believe that this incident will create a bad precedent, making it impossible for the new coach of the Polish national team to control the dressing room.
