Since being taken over by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), Al Hilal have been steadily signing big-name European signings such as Ruben Neves, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joao Cancelo, along with a record-breaking deal for Neymar.
This has led everyone to believe that the Riyadh-based team will soon bring in a star to replace Neymar, who returned to Santos in January, while preparing for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Ahead of the tournament, FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo could participate if he signed a contract with one of the 32 participating teams. And Al Hilal is a possible destination.
However, Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not go to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at all costs, while Al Hilal are in the US, ready for Group H matches against Real, Pachuca and RB Salzburg, without adding any stars.
According to CEO Esteve Calzada, Al Hilal's failure to sign contracts in June was due to the crazy demands of the players. "For a while, Al Hilal's contracts were legendary and created the impression that the club had unlimited money," he said, "But many players and their agents did not understand that we also had budget constraints."
"We have to emphasize that we are very confident in the quality of the squad we have. Next, there are no additional players coming from the current situation, when potential targets are offering crazy fees. They think we can pay any price. But Al Hilal cannot print money. We have to manage the club sustainably and only sign reasonable terms," Calzada affirmed.
