The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Uoc, in Kem hamlet, has been involved in tea growing for more than ten years. On an area of nearly 2,000 square meters, her family cultivates new varieties such as hybrid tea, 777 and Bat Tien. Tea trees are the main source of income, helping to cover their living expenses.
However, the product is currently sold mainly as fresh raw materials to processing factories in neighboring communes. Due to limited capital, machinery and processing techniques, the family has not been able to produce dry tea or build its own brand, resulting in low economic value and low income.
Ms. Uoc shared: Tea trees are the main source of income, but the production scale is small and the output is not stable, so the economic value is not high. We hope to receive support to invest in wells, automatic irrigation systems and build processing factories to improve the quality and value of products.
Hin Hamlet currently has about 7 hectares of tea, one of the largest tea growing areas in Yen Trach, with many households having been there for many years. However, the steep hilly terrain and fragmented production make it difficult to form a concentrated tea area. People lack knowledge about planting, care and processing techniques. Most households do not have their own processing facilities, and the main products are fresh tea. Therefore, the area is large but the economic value is not commensurate with the potential.
Ms. Ha Thi Ngoc, a long-time tea grower, said: Most households in the hamlet rely on tea trees as their main source of income. However, to develop sustainably, people need to access science and technology, participate in training courses and learn from the experiences of localities that grow tea more effectively.
Mr. Lai Van Nghia, Secretary of the Hin hamlet Party Cell, emphasized: The steep terrain makes it difficult to form a concentrated tea material growing area. Many tea-growing households still lack scientific and technical knowledge in care and processing, so productivity and quality are not high.
Not only in Hin hamlet, many other households in Yen Trach commune are also making efforts to maintain and develop tea trees. In Ba Luong hamlet, Mr. Ngo Quoc Khanh's family currently grows more than 3 sao of tea. Thanks to investment, his tea garden has developed stably, and is equipped with an automatic irrigation system for convenient care. He also bought new varieties to plant more and expand the area. However, due to limitations in techniques and pest control, the yield and quality of tea have not reached the desired level.
Mr. Ngo Quoc Khanh said: The commune is planning to expand the tea area, but the implementation process is still facing many difficulties. We hope to receive technical support in planting, care and pest control to improve efficiency. At the same time, we need support in product consumption to increase value and ensure long-term investment.
Yen Trach commune currently has more than 342 hectares of tea, with key varieties such as hybrid tea, 777 tea and Phuc Tho. In 2024, the average yield will reach 116 quintals/ha, with fresh tea buds producing nearly 3,900 tons. After processing, the commune will collect 770-780 tons of dry tea, bringing in a value of about 107 billion VND. However, Yen Trach does not have a concentrated raw material area and does not have products that meet OCOP standards - an important factor in increasing product value.
Ms. Le Thi Thuy Nguyen, Vice Chairwoman of the Commune People's Committee, said: Implementing Resolution 11 of the Provincial Party Committee and Resolution of the 1st Commune Party Congress, Yen Trach has developed a project to develop tea trees in the direction of improving productivity, quality and expanding area. The commune focuses on new planting and replanting with high-quality varieties, supporting people to access care and processing techniques.
In addition, taking advantage of resources from Resolution 08 of the Provincial People's Council, the commune will support investment in drying machines, irrigation systems, seeds, fertilizers and agricultural materials, aiming to form a concentrated tea growing area, achieving high productivity, quality, sustainable production and brand name.
With natural advantages, a long tradition of tea growing, and specific support mechanisms from the province, Yen Trach aims to turn tea into a sustainable livelihood for the people. When technical, infrastructure, processing and market solutions are implemented synchronously, tea not only creates jobs and increases income for the people but also becomes a key economic sector, contributing directly to the stable socio-economic development of the locality.
