In an interview with a reporter from the People's Daily based in China, researcher Lang Duc Quyen, former senior reporter and expert of the Xinhua News Agency's World Affairs Research Center and veteran scholar on Vietnam issues, said that April 30 this year is a major holiday - Vietnam celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, as well as the 50th anniversary of the victorious resistance war against the US to save the country.
50 years ago, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Vietnamese army and people carried out the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign , with fierce, overwhelming attacks, "like cutting bamboo", finally entering the center of Saigon and winning on April 30. The last helicopter of the invading American army fled in panic, the President of the puppet government of Saigon announced unconditional surrender. This event marked the complete victory of the 21-year resistance war against the US of the Vietnamese people, contributing to realizing President Ho Chi Minh's wish to liberate the South and unify the country.
Mr. Lang Duc Quyen assessed that the war in Vietnam was the longest and most fierce local war during the Cold War. Implementing the decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam led by President Ho Chi Minh on "liberating the South and unifying the country", the Vietnamese Army and people fought bravely, not afraid of sacrifice and hardship, conducting a great people's war against invaders, becoming a shining example for progressive forces in countries around the world.
This event was a great victory, a historical monument of the Vietnamese people and became hot news in the world media at that time. This victory wrote a brilliant chapter in the history of the struggle against imperialism and invasion of the Vietnamese people and the world. Vietnam realized the goal of liberating the South, unifying the country, creating the premise for the Doi Moi process initiated by the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Quoting the Chinese saying “On co nhi tri tan” (reviewing the past to learn new things, looking towards the future), scholar Lang Duc Quyen affirmed that Vietnam’s solemn celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification will bring indispensable solidarity and great motivation for opening a “ new era - the era of national growth ” at the 14th National Party Congress next year, contributing to the realization of the two “centennial” goals on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party and the founding of the country.
As a former reporter for Xinhua News Agency (China), who witnessed and participated in reporting on the resistance war against the US to save the country of the Vietnamese army and people, Mr. Lang Duc Quyen expressed his admiration and emotion at the spirit and vivid stories about the great revolutionary heroism of the Vietnamese army and people expressed through slogans such as "determined to fight and win", "determined to die for the Fatherland", "rear support for the front line", "three ready youth", "three capable women"...
Although he did not have the opportunity to report directly on the battlefields marking the victory of the 1975 Ho Chi Minh Campaign, Mr. Lang Duc Quyen was fortunate to join a delegation of foreign journalists organized by Vietnam in June 1975. From Hanoi to Saigon on a Vietnamese military transport plane, he visited and recorded the scene of the "puppet Presidential Palace" that had just been liberated and many battlefields outside Saigon where the smoke of gunfire had not yet cleared, and listened to battlefield commanders recount the process of fighting their way into Saigon from many different directions.
In April 2005, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Liberation of South Vietnam, journalist Lang Duc Quyen was invited to join a delegation of foreign journalists to Ho Chi Minh City for an interview. He witnessed with his own eyes the city's transformation, its economic sectors developing strongly, its people settling down and working happily, and everywhere he saw the joyful scenes of a dynamic city.
The solidarity and shared joys and sorrows throughout history will never be forgotten and will become a precious asset of the China-Vietnam friendship.
Researcher Lang Duc Quyen
What moved Mr. Lang Duc Quyen was that, during the Vietnamese people's resistance war against the US to save the country, the Party, Government, Army and people of China provided great support and assistance, more than 1,400 Chinese soldiers and experts heroically sacrificed and remained forever on Vietnamese soil. The solidarity and shared hardships in history will never be forgotten, becoming a valuable asset of the China-Vietnam friendship. This is a solid foundation for the two Parties and two countries to work together, deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, and build a China-Vietnam Community of Shared Future of strategic significance.
