Vietnamese primary school students are among the top in Southeast Asia in Math, Reading, and Writing.

The Ministry of Education and Training has just received the results of the Southeast Asia Primary School Learning Outcomes Assessment Program (SEA-PLM) for the 2024 cycle. In this cycle, 7 countries participated, including: Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

Vietnam has conducted an official survey at 152 primary education institutions in 53 provinces and cities across the country. Preliminary results show that Vietnamese students continue to be in the top three areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing among the seven participating countries. Detailed results on scores and rankings will be announced by the end of 2025.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam participated in this assessment for the first time in the 2019 cycle, including 6 participating countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

Accordingly, Vietnamese primary school students ranked first in all three survey areas, specifically: Math with 341.55 points (regional average is 304.79), Reading comprehension with 336.46 points (regional average is 300), Writing with 328.01 points (regional average is 304.92).

The 2019 and 2024 cycle results of Vietnamese students are similar to the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), for students aged 15.

In the PISA 2022 exam, the average score of 3 subjects of Vietnamese students ranked 2nd in the ASEAN region, after Singapore. Vietnamese students had the highest Math scores, only after Hong Kong (China), Taiwan (China), and South Korea when calculated according to the PISA index of socio-economic conditions.

SEA-PLM is a program implemented under the initiative of the Organization of Southeast Asian Ministers of Education, the Regional Office of the United Nations Children's Fund and the Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific.

SEA-PLM aims to assess the extent to which primary school students meet educational program objectives in Southeast Asian countries, particularly in the areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Global Citizenship.

The program is implemented every 5 years, creating a basis for countries to monitor progress in primary education.
