Vietnamese primary school students continue to be among the top performers in all three areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing in the Southeast Asian region.
In April 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) received the initial results from the Southeast Asia Primary School Learning Outcomes Assessment Program (SEA-PLM) cycle 2024. Accordingly, Vietnamese primary school students continue to be in the top in all three areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing. SEA-PLM cycle 2024 has 7 participating countries: Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam. The official results will be announced by the SEA-PLM Organizing Committee at the end of 2025. This reflects the efforts of the education sector in improving the quality of teaching.
Previously, in the SEA-PLM 2019 cycle, Vietnamese students also led in all three areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing. Vietnam's average score far exceeded the regional average with impressive numbers: Mathematics (341.55 points), Reading (336.46 points) and Writing (328.01 points). This affirms the outstanding learning ability of Vietnamese primary school students.
The 2019 and 2024 SEA-PLM results of Vietnamese students show clear similarities with the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), for 15-year-old students.
In the PISA 2022 exam, the average score of 3 subjects of Vietnamese students ranked 2nd in the ASEAN region, after Singapore. Specifically, Mathematics ranked 31/81 countries, Science ranked 35/81, Reading ranked 34/81. Vietnamese students have the highest Math scores after Hong Kong (China), Taiwan, and South Korea when calculated according to the PISA index of socio -economic conditions.
SEA-PLM is an international assessment program organized every 5 years, aiming to measure the capacity of primary school students in Southeast Asian countries. With the participation of 7 countries, SEA-PLM cycle 2024 continues to be the foundation for countries to build strategies to improve the quality of primaryeducation , promoting sustainable development. Vietnam participates in the program to assess the quality of education compared to the region, propose solutions for improvement and international integration in the field of education.
