The forum 'Should we resolutely ban students from using mobile phones in schools' attracted much attention from readers who are teachers, parents and experts. Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters continued to record the opinions of students in Ho Chi Minh City on this issue.

Support the ban

At Luong The Vinh Secondary School, District 1, Yen Vy (grade 6) said that students are not allowed to carry cell phones with them, even when the phone is turned off.

"If students bring their cell phones, they must hand them over to the supervisor or teacher at the beginning of class and get them back at the end of class. Students are not allowed to intentionally turn off their phones and leave them in their backpacks, because if they are discovered, they will be confiscated and their parents will be called to school. I think this is a good way to help students focus during class and not be distracted," Yen Vy said.

According to Yen Vy, students at Luong The Vinh High School, District 1 also have to hand in their phones to teachers at the beginning of class and get them back after school.

"It's good not to use cell phones in school"

At Minh Duc Secondary School, District 1, Nhu Quynh (grade 8) said that students are not allowed to use cell phones in school, including at the beginning of class and during recess. Students can bring cell phones but they must turn them off and can only use them after school. Nhu Quynh also has a cell phone but always follows school regulations, only turning it on after school to call her parents or book a ride-hailing service...

"The rules are very strict. If a student intentionally uses a cell phone in school and is discovered for the first time, the school will invite the parents to come and get it back. If the student repeats the violation, the cell phone will be confiscated by the school until the end of the school year. I think this rule is good. During recess, all the students in my school go down to the schoolyard, participate in many activities, chat, and exchange with each other," said Nhu Quynh.

Introverts want quiet space.

Phan Truc Anh, a student at Tran Van Giau High School in Binh Thanh District, said: "At my school, students are allowed to bring cell phones into school, but only during recess or when teachers allow them to use cell phones. Otherwise, students are not allowed to use cell phones."

Truc Anh supports this approach of Tran Van Giau High School, because "for students, studying is the most important thing". "If students use their phones freely in class, it is easy to be distracted from studying. However, after hard lessons, I think students should be allowed to use their phones as a form of entertainment", Truc Anh added.

Recess is not as lively as before. Maybe it is because I have not had time to adapt to the new school. But every recess, the school yard and hallway are so empty and strange. In class, some people are sleeping, and each person has a phone. It is no longer as cheerful and lively as before...

Minh Anh, student in Ho Chi Minh City

Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter asked: "Many people think that we should resolutely ban the use of cell phones in school, even during recess. Because during recess, students stand up to exercise, connect with friends, interact with teachers... not just sit and 'click on their phones', which will cause a disconnect... Do you have any objections to this point of view?"

Female student Phan Truc Anh replied: "In my opinion, this point of view is only partly correct because using the phone can break relationships. However, some introverts want a quiet space for themselves. Students today can also connect through online articles to discuss it together. In my opinion, each person will have a different way of taking a break. Some people choose to stand up and exercise, but some do not."

The article 'Should we resolutely ban students from using mobile phones in school?' by Thanh Nien Newspaper was shared on a student forum in Ho Chi Minh City with more than 530,000 followers. Below the post are nearly 1,000 comments from many students, parents, and teachers.

A student with the account Minh Anh commented: "Recess is not as lively as before. Is it because I transferred to another school and haven't had time to adapt? But every recess, the schoolyard and hallway are so empty and strange. In class, some people are sleeping, and each person has a phone. It's no longer as fun and lively as before...".

Should "show the deer the way"

Mr. Nguyen Viet Duc, a literature teacher at Dien Hong Secondary and High School, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, said that at the school where he works, students are allowed to bring cell phones into school but are not allowed to use them during class.

"In cases where the use is for learning purposes (during class time), the teacher must allow it. When the class uses students' personal devices such as laptops or cell phones, the teacher must clearly state on the board the time of use and the duration of use (for example, 15 minutes from ... to ...). School regulations all have regulations on the use of cell phones. If there is a violation, the device will be evaluated and disciplined; and in cases related to testing and evaluation, the testing regulations will be violated," said Mr. Nguyen Viet Duc.

"My personal opinion is that we should "show the deer the way to run". In the digital transformation period, we should not completely ban students from using mobile phones due to the great values that technology brings to life. Instead of banning,we should educate students on what they should use mobile phones for and for how long; school regulations should also change to keep up with the progress of the times, including regulations on how to use them properly, and how to handle improper use that affects teaching and learning activities in a strict but positive manner. We should not turn to banning them because it is difficult to manage," said a teacher at Dien Hong Secondary and High School, District 10.
