Thanh Den is an earthen rampart connecting the mountains to surround the northern part of the Inner Citadel of Hoa Lu Capital. The Institute of Archaeology has opened two excavation pits in two locations. The first pit is 450m2 wide, the second pit has an area of 150m2. The archaeological excavation process collected many specimens: materials (bricks, stones, clay), layers of plants, mollusk shells, ceramic artifacts, etc.
The results of the excavation of Thanh Den wall in 2025 continued to confirm the technique of building Hoa Lu citadel wall in the 10th century, along with the excavations at Dong Tuong in 1969, the exploration of Den wall in 2018, the emergency excavation of Dong Bac wall along with this excavation showed the consistency in the technique of building Hoa Lu citadel.
Up to now, it has been clear that the artificial walls in Hoa Lu were all built on the ground with a rather weak and muddy structure, so they all used the technique of spreading tree trunks and reinforcing them with wooden bars combined with piles to prevent landslides. The walls were built in a semicircular or trapezoidal shape, in which the outer slopes were often steeper than the inner slopes.
This excavation has fully complied with the steps of the archaeological research excavation process, the documents have been preserved through photos and archaeological descriptive drawings. The archaeological pit has been digitized through 3D Scanning to be able to reconstruct the research in the next stages. The results of the excavation of Den Citadel Wall in 2025 have partly clarified the construction techniques, methods and dates, thereby further understanding the function and contribution of Den Citadel Wall in the overall Hoa Lu capital.
In particular, the Workshop received 5 comments from experts, scientists, and managers on historical issues of Hoa Lu citadel in particular and Ninh Binh province in general.
Based on the opinions of experts and scientists at the Workshop, the working group will promptly complete the preliminary report and the summary report on the excavation results, as a basis for reporting to the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism according to regulations. Through the results of the Workshop and the research results of experts and scientists on the Den Citadel Wall, specialized units and consulting units will receive them as a basis for establishing an investment policy for the project to preserve, restore and renovate the Den Citadel Wall relic, serving the preservation and promotion of the relic's value, while serving the development of tourism and cultural industry, reporting to the Provincial People's Committee, ensuring scientific arguments and the authenticity of the relic.
