Scientific workshop to evaluate livelihood models for Khmer people in border areas

The provincial-level scientific project "Research and implementation of solutions to solve employment for Khmer ethnic people in border areas in Giang Thanh district and Ha Tien city, Kien Giang province" was implemented from September 2023 with 4 pilot livelihood models.

Participating in the models, 35 Khmer households were provided with jobs during the off-season; supported with seeds, seedlings, vaccines, fertilizers, bio-fertilizers, raw materials, agricultural production tools, etc. The funding to support the models is from 7 to 10 million VND/household, of which 50% is from scientific career capital and 50% is from participating households.

Vice Principal of Kien Giang Provincial Political School Pham Thi Thom (right cover) and Master Huynh Thi Hong Nuong - Lecturer of the Provincial Political School presented gifts to students who overcame difficulties to study well.

Master Huynh Thi Hong Nuong - Project Manager said that after the pilot implementation, the sweet potato growing model achieved a yield of 600kg/ha, selling price of 12,000 VND/kg (previously 8,000 VND/kg), average income reached 5 million VND/household.

Fattening cow model, up to now the cows have reached a weight of 230kg/head. Pig breeding model, up to now 6/8 households have pigs that have given birth to 54 piglets, the remaining 2 households are in the stage of good pig growth and have been mated, through preliminary survey, the expected income is about 11 million VND/household.

The implementation of teaching drawing on sedge products helped Khmer households after participating in the model to draw fluently, the value of sedge products increased by 15 - 20%, and total monthly income increased from 1-3 million VND/person.

Representative of Kien Giang OCOP One Member Limited Liability Company signed a memorandum of understanding with Phu My Lepironia Women's Cooperative (Giang Thanh) on cooperation and support for the consumption of Lepironia products.

At the workshop, delegates discussed and evaluated the results of implementing pilot livelihood models; proposed groups of feasible solutions to contribute to solving employment for Khmer people in Giang Thanh district, Ha Tien city; evaluated the advantages and limitations of each livelihood model during the implementation process...

Vice Principal of Kien Giang Provincial Political School Pham Thi Thom assessed that the host unit and the project implementation team had properly implemented the contents of the plan and models, contributing to job creation, equipping scientific production knowledge for highly effective production, and increasing income for Khmer people in Giang Thanh district and Ha Tien city.

On this occasion, Kien Giang Provincial Political School presented 2 gifts to students who overcame difficulties and studied well; Kien Giang OCOP One Member Limited Liability Company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Farmers' Association of My Duc Ward (Ha Tien City) and the Phu My Lepironia Women's Cooperative (Giang Thanh) on cooperation and support for the consumption of sweet potatoes and Lepironia products.
