A record number of Americans have already voted early in the 2024 presidential election, CBS News reported on November 4. Millions more are expected to vote before polls close in each state on Election Day on November 5. However, it is not the popular vote that determines who wins the presidency, but the electoral votes. There are 538 electoral votes in the United States, and a presidential candidate needs 270 to win. Most states implement the "winner-take-all" rule, meaning that the candidate who leads in the popular vote, regardless of the margin, receives all of that state's electoral votes. Only two states, Maine and Nebraska, allow split votes. The race between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will depend mainly on the electoral votes of seven battleground states. Among the seven battleground states, Pennsylvania has the most electoral votes with 19, followed by North Carolina and Georgia with 16 each, Michigan with 15, Arizona with 11, Wisconsin with 10 and Nevada with 6.

The state with the most electoral votes

California, the most populous state in the United States, has 54 electoral votes. With a population of more than 39.5 million according to the 2020 census, California has one electoral vote for every 732,189 residents. Next is Texas with 40 electoral votes, Florida with 30 and New York with 28.

State with the fewest electoral votes

The six least populous states, Alaska, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming, will each receive three electoral votes. Washington, DC, also gets three votes. Wyoming, with a population of about 576,850, is the smallest state in the country, giving it one electoral vote for every 182,283 residents.

The state that won the most electoral votes

Texas gained two electoral votes in 2024, bringing its total to 40 in this year's presidential election. Five other states — Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon — each gained one electoral vote.

The state that lost the most electoral votes

Seven states lost an electoral vote in this year's election, including California, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
