The first Youth Badminton Tournament in 2023, organized by the Provincial Badminton Federation in coordination with HTEducation and Event Company, has just taken place, promising the next generation of athletes for the current mass badminton movement in Ha Nam.
Badminton is the first and most popular sport in the province since the early days of the province's re-establishment in 1997. Since then, the badminton training movement has been vibrant, especially in agencies and units. In the localities, many families with large yards have also established badminton training points and groups. More than 25 years have passed, the first generations of players have retired or no longer practice, have switched to other sports, but the badminton movement is still developing strongly, especially at the grassroots level. An encouraging thing is that the badminton movement has developed to every family and parents themselves have inspired and guided their children to practice badminton to improve their health, limiting the effects of technological devices. Many former good athletes of the provincial badminton movement, physical education teachers have become enthusiastic coaches, teaching skills and passing on passion to the next generation.

The tournament attracted over 180 young athletes - the same number as the adult tournaments. To ensure that the children are of the right age and strength and can compete in many matches, the Organizing Committee divided the tournament into 5 age groups: 8 years old and under, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old, 13-14 years old, 15-17 years old. The athletes competed in 5 categories: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The singles categories are for all age groups, while the doubles categories are only for the 15-17 age group. The competition format is divided into groups, with a round-robin format to select the first and second place athletes to advance to the next round. Witnessing the children compete passionately and innocently, many of them have developed outstanding skills, showing their talent for this sport, showing a generation of quality replacement athletes, promising successful seasons.
At the 1st Youth Badminton Tournament in 2023, there was the Binh Luc District Badminton Club, founded by teacher Nguyen Van Sang (teacher of Dong Du Primary School, Binh Luc District) more than 11 years ago. Currently, the Club has developed additional classes in Duy Tien, Ly Nhan districts and Phu Ly city. Asked about the teaching method, teacher Nguyen Van Sang said: When participating in the class, students are taught from basic to advanced levels, but not all students can study at an advanced level. Some students have made progress after studying for a few months, some have studied for a few years but still for entertainment and exercise; some students only study during the summer, some are passionate about studying all year. To ensure quality teaching, basic classes only accept 10-12 students; advanced classes have 6-8 students.
As a badminton training club for school-age children that was established early, maintained for a long time and has a reputation, participating in the first Youth Badminton Tournament in 2023, the club had 36 athletes participating. In the announcement of the awards, Mr. Sang's athletes reaped a lot. The athletes competed in all 13 events of the tournament, of which 11 events had awards with a total of 22 awards, including 6 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 8 third prizes; especially in the age group 15 - 17 in the men's singles, Mr. Sang's athletes won the first, second, third and third prize medals. Sharing about the achievements of his students, Mr. Sang said: The most important thing for them to achieve achievements is passion, talent and determination. Besides, there is the support and encouragement of parents.
In order to continue implementing the Master Plan for the development of physical education and sports in schools for the period 2016 - 2021, with a vision to 2025; regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) on sports activities in schools, in recent times, the Department of Education and Training of Phu Ly city has focused on establishing many centers and sports clubs in schools, including badminton. The Badminton Training Center of the city's Department of Education and Training was established at the end of 2022 with about 90 athletes, operating at the Sports Hall of Tran Phu Secondary School. The current coach in charge of the Center is former athlete Tran Hong Quan. This is a veteran athlete who has achieved many achievements in badminton at the provincial and national levels, and has been awarded a national Badminton Coaching Certificate.
Mr. Tran Hong Quan said that the Center currently has 4 training classes, divided into 3 shifts/day. The classes are divided into separate groups and teams according to levels from general to basic and advanced. Not only focusing on the summer, the center has about 60 students studying throughout the year at the center. Participating in the 1st Youth Badminton Tournament in 2023, the center registered 50 athletes to compete. Although the achievements are not too outstanding, the activities are organized, the number of participating students is large, they are the pioneers in the school badminton movement and the next generation with many prospects for the badminton movement of the city and the province in the future.
Along with clubs related to education and coaches who are teachers, badminton clubs in communes and towns are also quite developed. The characteristic of many grassroots clubs is that many family members participate in training, parents practice and their children follow. Or in localities where there is a badminton movement, the senior teaches the junior, the elder teaches the younger.
Ms. Vu Thi Giang, Head of the Thi Son Badminton Club (Kim Bang) said: My family has 4 members who are passionate about badminton. My two sons often follow their parents to play badminton in the afternoon. At first, they just played back and forth, then gradually became passionate. The youngest son got acquainted with badminton in first grade, but this year, he is preparing to go to third grade and has only played a few sets for 2-3 months. Although he has just started playing, he has shown his athleticism, agility and technique, so I registered him to compete with his older brother and he made it to the next round, participated in the final match of the 8-year-old and under age group, won the First Prize Cup.
It is known that the boy is Do Vu Hai Dang, standing not too far from the net but with a strong competitive spirit. With good running ability, agility, and his main strength is dropping shots, he defeated his opponent Nguyen Ngoc Tuan Anh of Binh Luc District Club and received the praise of the coaches, athletes and parents present at the final match of the tournament.
In 2 days with more than 200 matches, 13 sets of Cups were awarded to the athletes. The 1st Youth Badminton Tournament, 2023 took place with the excitement of the athletes and the enthusiastic cheers of parents and spectators, creating a useful playground for the province's youth and children and promising the next generation of athletes for the quality badminton movement in the future.
