Towards a living wage for workers.

(HTV) - Contributing to the Draft Document of the 14th Party Congress, many experts proposed shifting from the "minimum wage" mindset to a "minimum wage sufficient for living," in order to ensure a decent standard of living, create motivation for commitment, and improve labor productivity.

Salaries haven't kept up with the cost of living.

According to the General Statistics Office, in 2024, the average salary of workers was approximately 8.9 million VND/month, while the minimum cost of living in major cities ranged from 10 to 12 million VND/month. This reality shows that current salaries do not fully meet basic living needs.

Proposal to include "living wage" as a development goal.
Along with economic development, special attention must be paid to the housing, material living conditions, and working environment of workers. Wages must be improved in proportion to their contributions, ensuring stable working conditions and living standards for employees.

Experts recommend that the Draft Political Report to be submitted to the 14th National Congress should include an assessment of the extent to which the minimum wage policy has met people's living standards over the past 40 years, and clearly define the goal of achieving a "living minimum wage" in the national development period of 2026-2035.

In addition, developing a salary calculation method that conforms to international standards is considered a crucial factor in ensuring sustainability and fairness.

Workers in the capital city are very excited that the document addresses the aspiration for national development in depth. This will create more job opportunities for workers, improve their quality of life, and increase their income to match the general standards of the region and the world .

According to experts, the shift from "minimum wage" to "living minimum wage" is not only a social security policy adjustment but also a strategic direction aimed at improving the quality of human resources, increasing labor productivity and national competitiveness, contributing to building a modern working class during the period of industrialization and modernization of the country.
