The authorities transported the bomb from the collection location on the bank of the Da River in Zone 1, Tu Vu Commune ( Phu Tho ) to Yen Mong training ground (Tan Hoa Ward) with a transport distance of about 30km to detonate it.
According to the Phu Tho Provincial Military Command, the bomb discovered and collected was a CBU-87 cluster bomb about 1.8 m long and 0.4 m in diameter, a type of weapon left over from the war. This is the type of bomb dropped by the US Air Force but did not explode. According to technical documents on bombs and mines during the Vietnam War, inside the "mother" bomb found in Tu Vu commune were many small bombs (sub-bombs) capable of causing great damage when exploded.
To transport the bomb to the detonation site, functional units of the Phu Tho Provincial Military Command used a prefabricated steel cage with fixed cushions. The bomb was then loaded onto a boat to move from Tu Vu commune to Yen Mong ferry (Tan Hoa ward) with a water distance of about 10km; then transferred to a transport vehicle to be taken to the training ground with a road distance of about 10km.
During the transportation, the police force, militia and other units coordinated to provide vigilance, provide directions, ensure traffic safety and security along the route. At the training ground, the detonation plan was carried out according to strict procedures, using 15kg of TNT explosives directly connected to the mother bomb and detonated using the electric ignition method.
Lieutenant Colonel Pham Minh Dang, Deputy Chief of Staff, Phu Tho Provincial Military Command, who directly directed the detonation work, said that the collection and detonation this time was carried out in accordance with the principles, ensuring absolute safety for the people and the task force. The close coordination between the Army, the Police and the local government has contributed significantly to the success of the plan, protecting the safety of the community and social order and safety in the area.
Previously on September 16, local people discovered an object suspected to be a bomb along the banks of the Da River and reported it to the commune authorities. The Tu Vu Commune People's Committee promptly cordoned off the area, put up warning signs, and kept watch 24/7, strictly prohibiting people from approaching the scene.
