Evra wants to face Suarez in the octagon. |
Evra, 43, retired from professional football in 2018 after a career spanning nearly two decades, with memorable spells at Manchester United, Juventus and the French national team.
However, few people know that this former defender started training MMA in 2016, with his close friend and MMA star Cedric Doumbe.
In a humorous but suggestive post on social media, Evra revealed that his debut opponent has yet to be decided. The former Manchester United defender said: "They asked me who I wanted to face. I said Luis Suarez. I'll pay from my own pocket. He might even bite me."
The statement recalls the famous controversy in 2011 - when Suarez, then playing for Liverpool, was suspended for eight matches for racially abusing Evra during an English derby.
Suarez is still competing and will certainly not be Evra's opponent in the cage, but the challenge from the former player born in 1981 shows that he entered MMA with the spirit and mindset of a true fighter.
“PFL Europe Paris will be a very special night for me,” said Evra. “I have trained with the best for many years and they say I am ready. I love not only football, but also combat sports .”
Evra made 379 appearances for Manchester United between 2006 and 2014, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League. He also played for Juventus, Monaco, Marseille and West Ham before retiring. After retiring, Evra became a popular television commentator with a humorous and energetic style.
