IDP to launch new international English certificate powered by AI

After IELTS, IDP will launch a new English test for the first time next December.

IDP, the co-owner of the IELTS test, announced on November 21 that it will launch Envoy, an adaptive online English test that can be taken anywhere in the world . The test is scheduled to launch globally from December, with a platform powered by AI technology and content designed by language experts to provide English teachers and students with a "more personalized, engaging and fun learning experience".

According to IDP, the Envoy international English certificate will assess the candidate's 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and candidates can choose 1 or all 4 skills. The test can last for 90 minutes, with at least 20 minutes for each skill. And within 2 hours, candidates will receive the test results converted according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

While Envoy’s chief marketing officer, Lauren Mcswain, did not specify the test fee, she said Envoy could meet the needs of English language schools and other businesses for a flexible, cost-effective test. “The test is the result of IDP’s deep understanding of the global education community,” Mcswain added in a statement.

To ensure the security and fairness of this online test, IDP said there are six main monitoring solutions that the agency will implement, namely email verification and portrait recognition; facial and eye movement tracking; prevention of copying and pasting of external text; multi-voice recognition capability; and prevention of switching to another tab while taking the test.

What will the exam structure be like?

On its homepage, the Envoy International English Certificate says that candidates will be asked to listen to recordings and answer a series of questions to measure their ability to understand and interpret information when following a conversation or monologue. In the reading section, candidates will be asked to read 2-4 texts to assess their ability to understand and classify main ideas, details and conclusions.

For the speaking skill, candidates must answer 5 open-ended questions to test their ability to communicate in real-life situations. This part requires candidates to be able to form ideas and express them using vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Finally, the writing skill requires candidates to write emails and essays to be tested on their ability to form and express ideas using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, structure and style.

According to IDP, the questions in the test are designed to assess English communication skills in real-world contexts. "IDP will continue to leverage AI-powered technologies to support and enhance learner-centered educational services. With this next-generation English test, Envoy will empower teachers to help every student reach their full potential," said McSwain.

The English language testing sector has seen many innovations in recent times, including the implementation of IELTS and TOEFL iBT tests at home during the pandemic. In 2022, Password English Language Testing in the UK will also launch its own online test, joining Duolingo, LanguageCert, PSI, Trinity, iTEP, Pearson and the University of Cambridge English Language Assessment in recent years.
