Based on various sources, it can be seen that Apple has been developing a foldable iPhone for many years, but it will be a while before users actually see it on the market. Apple is very secretive about naming its upcoming products, so the iPhone Fold is just a temporary name and not the final name when they appear on the market. For example, the iPhone Flip is also considered a potential candidate.
A design concept for Apple's iPhone Fold
What will it look like?
There have been a number of rumors about what the iPhone Fold could look like. Some reports suggest that Apple is working on an iPhone similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, meaning it will be an iPhone that opens up on one side to reveal a large iPad-like display.
But that might not be the actual design, as leakster Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple doesn’t want to mess with the iPad line. An iPhone Fold that’s big enough to transform into an iPad mini could put people off buying an iPad. Apple wants to avoid that, so the product could look similar to the Galaxy Z Flip, meaning it’ll have a classic flip phone feel.
Has an interesting display
If Apple were to go with something like the Galaxy Z Fold, there have been reports that the company is testing some sort of large foldable display, either 8 inches or 9 inches. A 9-inch display would make the iPhone Fold larger than both the iPad mini (8.3 inches) and the Galaxy Fold (7.6 inches). Apple is also rumored to be working on a foldable iPad, though, so that could be why it’s testing such a large display.
Apple is testing different types of folding screens
There are also rumors that Apple is preparing to use a color e-ink display, which is essentially a lower power display designed for efficiency. In the case of a “Flip” design, it would be great to save power with a secondary display.
Not cheap
Apple is known for its premium products, so the price of the iPhone Fold won’t be cheap. There haven’t been many leaks about what the price might be, but everything seems to be guesswork based on what competitors are offering.
Currently, the Galaxy Z Flip4 starts at around $1,000, while the larger and more powerful Galaxy Z Fold4 starts at $1,800. Regardless of which design direction Apple takes, one thing is for sure: it won't be a cheap iPhone, with an expected price tag of at least $1,100.
Release date
Finally, the thing that most people are most interested in: When will the iPhone Fold be released? The truth is, none of this information is completely accurate. Some believe that Apple will launch it in 2023, but that's likely not going to happen.
There will likely be no foldable iPhone launch this year.
Initially, analyst Ming-chi Kuo said Apple could release the iPhone Fold in 2024, but he now says the product won't launch before 2025. This means 2025 is the most suitable time for the foldable iPhone to appear.
