On December 3, Israel said that since launching a ground operation in Gaza on October 27, Israeli authorities have discovered 800 tunnels in the Hamas liberation movement's underground tunnel and bunker network.
According to the Israeli Army, the bunkers were located in residential areas, near or inside civilian buildings and structures such as schools, kindergartens, churches, and playgrounds. Israeli forces destroyed 500 of them by means such as detonation and blockade.
Before the conflict broke out, the Hamas Islamist movement said it had a tunnel system hundreds of kilometers long, equivalent to the size of the New York subway system, with the function of protection and as a base of operations.
According to CNN, the underground tunnel system in Gaza began construction 30 years ago, best known as the passages used to transport goods from Egypt and launch attacks on Israel.
Hamas' tunnel network in Gaza is known as the "Gaza metro" by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2021, Hamas claimed to have built 500 kilometers of tunnels under the Gaza Strip, although it is unclear whether this figure is accurate.
