Israel says it is targeting Iran's nuclear facilities and long-range missiles

Israel launched a large-scale air campaign against multiple targets in Iran early on June 13. Tel Aviv called it a “preemptive strike.”

According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, the attack took place amid fears of a retaliation from Tehran.

“Following Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran, we expect a missile and drone attack on Israeli territory and civilians to soon follow,” Katz said.

The airstrikes targeted facilities involved in Iran’s nuclear program and long-range missiles, an Israeli military official said, describing them as “precise, coordinated, and carefully prepared” strikes against dozens of targets across Iran.

An Israeli source told CNN that this was just the “first wave of attacks.”

“This is not a one-day attack. Israel saw a favorable military and diplomatic opportunity to act,” the source stressed.

Iranian state media (IRNA) reported that several loud explosions were heard in the capital Tehran. Iran has issued a NOTAM (notice to airmen) to temporarily close the airspace over the area.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Washington was not involved in and did not support Israel's air strike campaign.

“Israel acted unilaterally. Our top priority is to protect American forces in the region,” Rubio said, warning Iran not to target American interests or personnel.
