Jeep Grand Cherokee 2026 has new turbocharged engine, fuel economy

Jeep has just officially introduced the mid-life upgrade of the 2026 Grand Cherokee mid-size SUV. The car has a new, more powerful and more economical turbocharged engine.

According to the announcement of Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, the 2026 Grand Cherokee is equipped with a 2.0L Hurricane 4 Turbo engine, with a maximum capacity of 324 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. This number makes the new engine about 20% more powerful than the old 2.0L turbocharged generation, while saving 10% more fuel.

TJI technology is considered the “secret” behind these impressive improvements. Specifically, the system uses a small “cup”-shaped secondary combustion chamber located above each cylinder, where the first ignition takes place. The flame then spreads quickly into the main combustion chamber, helping the fuel burn more thoroughly, creating more power while reducing fuel consumption.

The Hurricane 4 Turbo is built with lightweight materials such as aluminum for the engine block, timing cover and oil pan. It also combines both direct and indirect fuel injection, comes with two spark plugs per cylinder and a Variable Geometry Turbocharger that can generate a maximum charge pressure of 35 psi.

The 12:1 compression ratio allows the engine to operate optimally even when using RON 87 fuel (regular gasoline), making operating costs more reasonable. According to Jeep, 90% of maximum torque is maintained in the range of 2,600 to 5,600 rpm and reaches 100% from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm, promising smooth and powerful acceleration.

In addition to the new engine, the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee is also refreshed with a more sophisticated and modern design. The front of the car stands out with a redesigned 7-slot grille, accompanied by slimmer LED headlights and a lowered front bumper. The rear of the car is also refined with slimmer taillights and a sporty rear bumper.

Inside, Jeep upgraded the infotainment system with a larger 12.3-inch center screen, along with a 10.3-inch secondary screen for the front passengers. The interior continues to maintain the luxurious, comfortable style that is the strength of the Grand Cherokee, with the option of premium leather materials and metal trim details.

The 2026 Grand Cherokee's trim range has been reduced from five to three main configurations: Laredo, Limited, and Summit. The familiar 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine is still standard on the Laredo, while Laredo Altitude and above models will have the option of a new Hurricane 4 Turbo engine.

In addition to the standard 2-row version, Jeep continues to offer the 3-row Grand Cherokee L and the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version in the Limited, Summit and Trailhawk configurations. This model is aimed at customers who value versatile performance, fuel economy but still powerful when needed.

Jeep is also adding three new paint colors for 2026: Steel Blue, Copper Shino, and Fathom Blue, giving customers more personalization options. Jeep has not yet announced official pricing for the 2026 Grand Cherokee.

The 2025 predecessor started at $38,460, so expect the new upgrade to see a slight price increase. Sales in the US are expected to begin later this year.
