The person behind the Tesla Cybertruck car bomb explosion outside the Trump International Hotel last week used ChatGPT to plan the attack, according to police.
The Tesla Cybertruck explosion took place on the morning of January 1 outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Chief Kevin McMahill said at a press conference on January 7 that car bombing suspect Matthew Livelsberger searched for information on how much explosives he needed, where to buy fireworks, and how to buy a phone without providing identification using ChatGPT. McMahill called the use of generative AI “a game-changer.”
“We know that AI is going to be disruptive at some point in our lifetime,” said McMahill. “This is the first incident that I know of on U.S. soil where ChatGPT was used to help an individual create a special device.”
A spokesperson for OpenAI – the developer of ChatGPT – said their models are designed to mitigate harmful instructions and malicious content.
In the above case, ChatGPT responded by publicly disclosing information on the Internet and issuing warnings against illegal or harmful activities.
Other new details in the investigation were also revealed at the press conference. Livelsberger documented his activities leading up to the bombing, including buying guns and renting a Cybertruck on the Turo app.
Sheriff McMahill said investigators still need to recover information from laptops, cell phones and smartwatches.
