Conclusion of the case of the wife of the President of South Korea plagiarizing her doctoral thesis
The wife of South Korean President Kim Keon Hee is facing accusations of plagiarism in her master's thesis submitted to Sookmyung Women's University. Korea Times.
This is not the first time that the wife of President Yoon Suk Yeol has been accused of plagiarism. A group of professors, representing 14 academic associations, previously held a press conference to announce the results of an investigation, claiming that many of Ms. Kim's academic works showed signs of violating basic academic standards.
In a master's thesis submitted to Kookmin University in 2008, the group found that 220 sentences out of 860 sentences were copied from uncited sources. The sources included a research paper by Professor Gu Yeon Sang from Sookmyung University, newspaper articles, and the online thesis platform "Happy Campus."
The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has been quick to demand an independent investigation into the allegations against Kim Keon Hee. The DPK has announced that it will submit a bill called "Special Prosecutor Kim Keon Hee" to appoint a special team to investigate allegations of plagiarism, academic fraud, stock price manipulation and bribery.
DPK leader Park Hong Geun stressed the need for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for the president's wife .
In addition, the DPK's Education Committee also held a press conference, demanding that Ms. Kim publicly apologize and take responsibility for the allegations. At the same time, the party is considering filing a complaint against Kookmin University for declaring that it found no serious violations in Ms. Kim's master's thesis.
However, the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) said the professors' accusations were politically motivated, implying their involvement with DPK leader Lee Jae-myung. PPP spokesman Park Jung-ha accused the group of being a " political organization disguised as an academic" aimed at exerting political influence. He also pointed out that some associations within the group had openly supported Mr. Lee in the presidential election.
