The Russian Investigative Committee said on August 27 that it had completed DNA testing of those killed in the recent plane crash north of Moscow, identifying all 10 ill-fated passengers, including Yevgeny Prigozhin.
An Embraer Legacy 600 private jet crashed in the Tver region, 160 km north of the Russian capital, while en route to St. Petersburg on August 23, killing all three crew members and seven passengers.
“As part of the investigation into the plane crash in the Tver region, molecular genetic tests have been completed. As a result, the identities of all 10 victims have been established, corresponding to the list given in the flight manifest,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement on August 27.
Mr Prigozhin is the boss of Wagner PMC, which staged a mutiny against Russia's military leadership in late June. Also on the plane was Dmitry Utkin, the founder of Wagner Group.
Both Mr Prigozhin and Mr Utkin were named on the passenger list released by Russia's civil aviation agency.
A criminal investigation is being conducted by Russian authorities to look into the possibility that flight safety rules were violated.
Apart from the DNA test results, the Russian Investigative Committee did not provide further details about the possible cause of the plane crash.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the incident a "tragedy" and said speculation that it was staged by Moscow was "absolutely false".
Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 24 called Mr. Prigozhin a “talented businessman” but also said he “made serious mistakes in life.”
The Wagner Group has been heavily involved in Russia's war in Ukraine and also has a significant presence in West and Central Africa .
