Taking place from November 17 to 26, at Kim Ma Theater (Hanoi), assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to the Department of Performing Arts to preside over, in coordination with the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, the 2025 National Tuong and Folk Drama Festival has the participation of more than 1,000 professional artists and actors from 10 art units competing to perform 14 elaborately staged plays.

Assessing the professional quality, People's Artist Le Tien Tho, Chairman of the Art Council, said that the festival had 8 plays and 6 folk operas of various genres and themes. Of these, 8 were about history; 4 were about the resistance war against France and the US; 1 was about a folk tale with mythological elements; 1 was about modern anti-corruption.
According to People's Artist Le Tien Tho, historical themes are the main theme of the plays, mainly composed and staged by Tuong art troupes with highly conventional and general artistic characteristics. The works are vividly recreated, aiming to send historical lessons to today's audience with a new approach in script structure and problem-posing.

Regarding modern themes, the period of resistance against France and the US, was staged by folk art units. The image of the heroic Vietnamese mother digging tunnels to feed cadres, sending her children to the battlefield, along with special forces soldiers and police participating in the fight to protect the Fatherland was vividly portrayed by the artists.
The scriptwriters are all experienced in writing and have knowledge of the genre. Many professional adaptation authors can handle diverse melodies in situations and circumstances, resolve conflicts, and build plays. The limitation in scriptwriting is that many authors speak for the characters. They pose problems but do not solve them...

Regarding directors, some people stage many works, so there is easy overlap, and they do not fully understand the rules of conventionality, so the stage design is not suitable. Some directors exploit traditional performances in historical plays without knowing how to select, causing offense. Many plays include songs, destroying the melody of the opera and folk songs.
In this festival, many artists performed successfully, impressing their colleagues and art-loving audiences. The dance moves and difficult melodies in the art of Tuong and folk songs were all performed skillfully by the artists, maintaining the basic features...

Speaking at the closing and award ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong emphasized that the festival demonstrated the serious, responsible and creative artistic working spirit of art units across the country. Each play and each role not only demonstrated professional capacity but also crystallized love for the profession, the desire to continue tradition, and innovate methods of expression to suit the increasingly high enjoyment needs of the public in the new context.
The festival recognizes the persistent and silent contributions of the creative team – directors, musicians, choreographers, artists, musicians, technicians… who have created an aesthetically rich stage space and sophisticated artistic effects, contributing to increasing the depth of the message of each work.
In addition to its artistic value, the festival also creates an environment for professional exchange, expands creative space and contributes to nurturing the next generation - those who will continue to shoulder the mission of preserving and promoting the art of Tuong and folk opera in the future.

According to Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, the 2025 National Tuong and Folk Opera Festival is also an opportunity to clearly recognize the responsibility in the work of preserving and promoting national cultural heritage. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will continue to direct the development of appropriate mechanisms and policies, creating conditions for the creative environment to develop; focusing on improving the quality of works, consolidating performing human resources and enhancing communication and promotion to bring Tuong and folk opera closer to modern audiences, while encouraging art units to boldly innovate approaches, increase the application of science and technology, expand the audience and improve the lives of artists.
“This is not only the task of theaters and artists but also the common responsibility of the entire industry in preserving and promoting the core values of Vietnamese culture,” the Deputy Minister affirmed.

Closing the festival, the Organizing Committee awarded 2 Gold Medals and 3 Silver Medals to plays; 18 Gold Medals and 34 Silver Medals to actors, and Excellence Awards to creative elements.

In which, the Gold Medal for the performance belonged to the play "Fire in Phien Nung" of the Vietnam National Traditional Theater; the folk drama "Sinking in the Whirlpool" of the Nghe An Traditional Arts Center.
