A female tourist came to a sidewalk sticky rice shop on Bat Su Street (Hoan Kiem Ward). Called a “shop”, the space here is quite modest, with only a few utensils to hold ingredients and food and about a dozen plastic chairs for customers to sit and eat on the spot.

Anne said she wanted to sit on the sidewalk to have the full experience like a local and feel the atmosphere of Hanoi streets.

Here, she ordered two mixed sticky rice dishes, totaling 100,000 VND. She was served free iced tea.

When the hot sticky rice dish was served, the Japanese female YouTuber expressed surprise and delight at the full portion, with many accompanying ingredients such as braised ribs, pate, fried eggs, fried onions...

Each meal also comes with a bowl of pickled cucumber slices to help diners eat away the feeling of fullness. “I have never seen this dish before so I feel quite excited,” said the female tourist from the land of cherry blossoms.

She quickly tasted the first piece of sticky rice and immediately exclaimed, “It’s so delicious.” “With each chew, the sticky rice feels more chewy and elastic. The fried onions on top create a wonderful highlight and make the dish more attractive and unique.

“I feel like this taste is similar to something I used to eat at a ramen restaurant (a type of noodle in Japan), which served white rice as a side dish,” Anne described.

The female tourist also praised the braised ribs as very delicious. The meat was braised for many hours so it was tender, had a beautiful brown color and was soaked in spices, feeling fatty and rich.

Although there are many ingredients, the combination with crunchy pickled cucumbers helps the dish become balanced and not greasy at all.

Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Ms. Thanh Hang - owner of the sticky rice shop that the Japanese guest visited said that the shop has been open for more than 10 years.

The restaurant specializes in serving sticky rice dishes with many ingredients including spicy ribs, braised meat, ham, eggs, pork floss, Chinese sausage and chicken, meeting the diverse needs and tastes of diners of all ages.

According to Ms. Hang, to have delicious sticky rice, the sticky rice must be carefully selected. The restaurant uses velvet sticky rice, soaked for 6-8 hours and then steamed twice to ensure the sticky rice is fragrant and soft. The accompanying ingredients are carefully prepared and cooked fresh every day to preserve the full flavor.

"The ribs, braised pork, and fried onions are homemade. As for the pork floss, ham, sausage, etc., we will order from a reputable source.

For the braised ribs dish – the most popular with customers – I have to choose loin ribs. This type of ribs has small bones and a lot of meat. Wash it, marinate it, and simmer it for 2 hours until tender, then continue to simmer over low heat.

This method helps the braised ribs to be soft, well-seasoned and stay hot," Ms. Hang revealed.

According to the female owner, the restaurant uses about 30kg of rice on average every day. During holidays, the amount increases. Each portion of sticky rice at the restaurant costs from 30,000 to 50,000 VND, depending on the portion and the amount of side dishes that customers choose.

The shop is open from 6am to 2pm daily.
