Leaving Vietnam, Andrew McMahon and his girlfriend (Irish nationality) have not forgotten the feeling of fear, after witnessing a series of wooden tables being thrown away at the train track coffee street in Hanoi .

While holding his phone to film the train passing by, Andrew accidentally recorded the entire incident.

The video , shared on social media, has attracted a lot of interactions. Comments say that sitting down to drink water and take pictures of the train at close range is potentially dangerous.

Andrew told Dan Tri reporter that at 5:50 p.m. on October 2, after finishing dinner, he and his girlfriend went to the train track coffee street in the heart of Hanoi.

Before traveling to Vietnam, the 24-year-old man had read a lot of information about the cafe style next to the train tracks. Therefore, the couple decided to put this place on the list of must-visit places.

"This is a famous place that tourists tell each other about. The feeling of seeing the train approaching at a very close distance makes us excited," said the male tourist.

The scene was not as lively as Andrew had imagined. The friendly owner served drinks but gave no warning to the two foreigners. As the train approached, he heard the whistle, and the waiter hurriedly cleared the table.

"As the train passed, tables and chairs from the cafe next door hit the train, scattering food and causing some customers to scream. A table was thrown over and hit my leg. My girlfriend got ketchup on her shirt and an ashtray hit her," Andrew recalled.

Immediately after the incident, some customers immediately left the scene. Despite the fear, Andrew stayed to help the owner clean up before returning to the hotel.

According to the male tourist, there are many posts on social networks sharing experiences of coffee shops on the railway in Vietnam, he and his girlfriend did not think about the dangers they might face. Out of curiosity, they wanted to explore this place.

"I think the cause of the incident was that the owner of the coffee shop next door did not check the distance between the table and the tracks before the train arrived," he said.

It is known that the couple spent 6 months traveling to a series of Asian countries, including Vietnam. The two guests are currently in Sichuan, China.

During their 2 weeks in Vietnam, Andrew and his girlfriend visited Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An ancient town (Da Nang city), Hanoi and Sa Pa (Lao Cai province). In addition to being impressed by the beautiful natural landscape and friendly people, the couple also loved the delicious bread.

"We had to leave Vietnam earlier than expected due to a big storm. My girlfriend and I will return to Vietnam soon. If we go to the train street cafe again, we will definitely be more careful," said the Irish man.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, a representative of Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police (Hanoi) said that they had received information about the video recording the scene where the train knocked over tables and chairs at a coffee shop.

"We are sending forces to check whether the incident happened at a coffee shop in the ward or not?", the representative said.

This is not the first time an incident has occurred at the Hanoi Railway Coffee Street. In June, a foreign male tourist using his phone to record a video slipped and fell towards the train. Luckily, other tourists around him were able to pull him back in time, preventing an accident.

In September 2022, a foreign tourist tried to squeeze past the barrier to take photos in the railway cafe street, resulting in a collision with the Lao Cai - Hanoi train that was honking to request passage from Long Bien bridge to the station.

The train street connecting Le Duan, Tran Phu, Cua Dong and Phung Hung streets, about 2km long, is known as a place that attracts a lot of tourists, especially on weekends.

In particular, the train street section from Tran Phu to Phung Hung is about 300m long, and is called "new train street coffee street" by tourists.

In March 2025, the Hanoi Department of Tourism issued a document requesting travel agencies in the city not to organize tours to bring visitors to experience the train street coffee street.
