Customers accuse restaurant in Hoi An of selling meals for 200,000 VND/person, what does it say?

On May 16, social media was abuzz with the news that a restaurant on Hoi An Memory Island (Cam Nam ward, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province) was accused by diners of charging 200,000 VND/person for a meal but the food was simple.

Specifically, on a Facebook group that attracted more than 1.1 million members, the VGN account wrote: "The whole scene of a 200,000 VND/person meal in Hoi An. The meal comes with a ticket to see the Hoi An Memories Show, the meal is calculated separately at 200,000 VND/person. In the picture, there is a 60,000 VND/can beer, calculated separately. Our group of 19 people were bewildered. On the first day in Hoi An, we were served with burnt pork, braised fish, and stir-fried vegetables + soup."

The above content was posted with pictures of the dishes and quickly attracted thousands of interactions and comments. Many opinions expressed strong opposition and said that this restaurant in Hoi An had "ripped off" customers and was doing business in a haphazard manner. Besides, there were also opinions agreeing with the above prices because this is a resort and sightseeing area.

By the afternoon of May 16, a representative of Gami Hoi An Joint Stock Company, the owner of Hoi An Memories Island resort and entertainment area, said that the place where the group of guests went to have fun and eat was called Hoi An Memories Land on Hoi An Memories Island. Accordingly, the price of food and beverage services as well as watching the Hoi An Memories show was officially announced by the unit according to the package. The information that the customer mentioned was unclear about whether the family went with a tour company, bought combo packages or went to the restaurant to choose their own dishes, so it was difficult to have appropriate assessments.

This company also said that if the family of the guest bought the combo package directly from Hoi An Memories, the meal sold with the show ticket would be sold at a preferential price like the prices we mentioned above, without the separate price of 200,000 VND/person. If the family went alone and chose their own dishes at the restaurant, there would be price lists and specific menus of dishes posted for customers to choose from before deciding to order.

The company also confirmed: “The customer also could not provide a receipt for the day of service, so it is difficult to assess the exact amount of food the customer was served compared to the image provided by the customer. In addition, as the customer wrote in the group on social media: if the group of 19 people usually have to set up meals for a total of 3 tables, but currently we have recorded an image of 1 table and the food has been used. Therefore, the information provided by the customer is not accurate.”
