Exploitation from groundwater to surface water for rural water supply

To improve the quality and capacity of clean water supply for people, the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City has built and upgraded the water supply system in Phong Dien, Thoi Lai, Co Do and Vinh Thanh districts. At the same time, the exploitation source has been converted from underground water to surface water to supply input water for many clean water plants in 4 districts of the city. Up to now, people have been using clean rural water from surface water exploitation sources, at good prices...

Since the beginning of 2023, the centralized water supply system of Thoi Thanh commune in Thoi Hoa B hamlet, Thoi Thanh, Thoi Lai district has been invested in, completed and put into operation a cluster of factories to exploit and treat surface water sources to provide clean water to serve the people.

Mr. Vo Van Dung, residing in Thoi Hoa A hamlet, Thoi Thanh commune, Thoi Lai district, said: “My family has participated in installing clean water meters from the centralized water supply system of Thoi Thanh commune for many years. Previously, this water supply system exploited underground water sources, but now it has switched to exploiting surface water sources on the river to serve clean water production. I see that exploiting underground water and river water to produce clean water both provide good water quality, clear, clean water, and are safe for health. However, exploiting river water sources will help limit underground water exploitation, contributing to preserving underground water resources for future generations. At the same time, river water sources when treated into clean water are also preferred by many people.” According to Mr. Vien Thanh Vu, manager of the centralized water supply system of Thoi Thanh commune, the system has a capacity and ability to supply clean water of 10,000m3/day and night. This project is invested with factory clusters and modern water treatment equipment and technology, helping to provide clean water that meets the standards and quality prescribed by the State. Currently, this clean water supply system not only provides clean water to serve people in Thoi Thanh and Tan Thanh communes of Thoi Lai district but also connects the pipeline network to bring clean water to serve people in Thoi Hoa, Thoi An and Long Hung wards of O Mon district.

Participating in using clean water supplied from the centralized water supply system of Thoi Thanh commune, many households in wards of O Mon district also assessed the water source as being of good quality, the tap water flows strongly and ensures a stable water supply. Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen, residing in Hoa Thanh A area, Thoi Hoa ward, O Mon district, said: "The water here is very good, the tap water flows strongly, the water is clean, ensuring peace of mind for users and there are almost no water outages".

The Water Center has been converting the exploitation source from underground water to surface water in 5 concentrated clean water supply systems in 4 districts of the city. Specifically, including: The surface water supply system project of Thoi Thanh commune in Thoi Lai district, with a capacity of 10,000m3/day and night, serving Thoi Thanh and Tan Thanh communes in Thoi Lai district and some wards in O Mon. The surface water supply system project of Nhon Ai commune in Phong Dien district, with a capacity of 28,000m3/day and night, serving the water supply for Nhon Ai, Truong Long, Tan Thoi and Giai Xuan communes in Phong Dien district and connecting with Truong Thanh and Truong Thang communes in Thoi Lai district. The surface water supply project of Dong Thang commune, Co Do district, with a capacity of 15,000m3/day and night, serves to supply water to the communes of Dong Thang, Thoi Xuan, Dong Hiep in Co Do district and the communes of Thoi Tan, Dong Thuan in Thoi Lai district. The surface water supply system of Thoi Dong commune, with a capacity of 5,000m3/day and night, serves to supply water to the communes of Thoi Dong, Thanh Phu in Co Do district and Thanh Loc commune in Vinh Thanh district. The surface water supply system of Thanh An - Thanh Thang - Thanh Loi commune, with a capacity of 6,600m3/day and night, serves to supply water to the communes of Thanh An, Thanh Thang, Thanh Loi and part of the communes of Thanh Tien, Thanh Quoi in Vinh Thanh district. Up to now, 3/5 of the surface water supply system projects have been completed and put into operation, and the remaining 2 projects are expected to be completed this year.

According to Mr. Nguyen The Lam, Deputy Director of the Water Center, when put into operation, the above projects will provide about 60% of the water supplied from rural clean water supply systems in the city, with a total water volume of about 64,000m3/day and night. Thereby, limiting the exploitation of underground water, contributing to the protection of underground water resources according to the general policy of the city. At the same time, the quality of water supplied to people is improved according to a standard (no distinction between urban and rural water according to the regulations of the National Technical Regulation on clean water quality of the Ministry of Health ). People also benefit because the water price before and after the project is the rural water price according to the decision of the City People's Committee, which is lower than the urban water price.
