Tainan, an ancient and culturally rich city in southern Taiwan, is famous not only for its historical sites but also for its exquisite blend of cultural heritage and nature. It is known as the "cradle of Taiwanese culture" with many ancient architectural works and unique traditional festivals. Among the must-see destinations in Tainan, Chimei Museum stands out as a gem, offering a unique cultural and artistic experience.
Chimei Museum, also known as the Chi Mei Museum, is located about 10km from downtown Tainan. This museum was founded by Mr. Shi Wen-Long, owner of Chimei Group, an amateur violinist. Because of his passion, he established the Chi Mei Cultural Foundation and sponsored scholarships for violinists to improve their classical music skills in Taiwan.
The Chimei Museum was born from his violin collection. Built in 1992, the Chimei Museum was donated to the Tainan City Government in 2012 and officially opened to the public in 2015.
The Chimei Museum's collections are mainly oriented towards collecting Western art, musical instruments, weapons, animal specimens and fossils, with a total of more than 4,000 artifacts on display, about one-third of the total collection.
The museum's founder believes: "Beautiful artifacts cannot be admired by just one person, they need to be shared with as many people as possible. Collected artifacts cannot just have the taste that you like, more importantly, everyone likes them."
The collection is divided into different categories including animal galleries, art, musical instruments and weapons. Entering the Chimei Museum, visitors will immediately feel the luxurious space with classic European style. The architecture of the museum stands out with a large dome and majestic facade, decorated with a fountain in the shape of Apollo, reminiscent of famous buildings in Europe. The campus surrounding the museum is also surrounded by green gardens, clear lakes, and wooden corridors, creating a relaxing and romantic space for visitors.
The Chimei Museum is divided into several exhibition areas with different themes, each designed to provide an interesting and in-depth experience. The first floor of the museum focuses on the collection of weapons and wildlife artifacts.
On display are a wide range of weapons from around the world, from Asia to Europe, as well as animal models from the Arctic to Antarctica. These artifacts not only reflect the advancement of military technology but also provide insight into the diversity of the animal kingdom.
The second floor of the museum is a classical European art space, displaying many famous works from the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, visitors have the opportunity to admire iconic paintings and sculptures of the Baroque and Renaissance periods.
In addition, the museum also owns a rich collection of musical instruments, with thousands of violins and phonographs from the 1920s and 1930s, adding a cultural depth to the visitor experience. With a special love for violins, the musical instrument gallery has a special section dedicated to exploring the perfect beauty of violin-family instruments and the aesthetic beauty and creativity they have inspired throughout history.
In addition to Western art, the Chimei Museum also exhibits artifacts and artworks from East Asian cultures, especially China. Pottery, porcelain, and artifacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties are displayed here, helping visitors understand more about the development and diversity of Asian art.
Chimei Museum is a destination for those seeking the perfect blend of art, history and nature on their Taiwan exploration.
