On May 13, Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, Quang Ninh province continued to mark an important milestone when it successfully performed its third kidney transplant, making kidney transplant a routine procedure at the hospital.

This event has affirmed the ability to master specialized techniques in the field of organ transplantation - a new, modern technique, on par with central hospitals. Previously, the first two transplants in April 2025 were successful, the patients were stable and discharged from the hospital.

Patient NTH, 27 years old, residing in Dong Trieu, has end-stage renal failure. Instead of transferring to Hanoi for kidney transplant, patient H's family placed their trust in the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. After nearly 3 weeks of completing professional evaluation, testing, and legal documents, the transplant pair was determined. The donor is patient H's biological mother, this is a transplant pair with the same bloodline.

It is known that, facing the serious health decline of her child, the mother of the patient NTH voluntarily donated her kidney with the wish to bring health to her child.

The surgery lasted more than 3 hours, performed by a team of doctors from the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital with the support of leading experts from the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital. The transplant process went smoothly, the transplanted kidney excreted well, and produced urine immediately after the ureter was connected. Currently, both the donor and recipient are in stable health.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Nhu Trung, Department of Nephrology and Urology, Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital said that kidney transplantation from living donors, with the same bloodline, often has good immune compatibility and better kidney function. However, kidney transplantation from living donors also requires more careful preparation and coordination between teams, closely monitoring both kidney donors and kidney transplant patients.

The success of three consecutive kidney transplants at the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is not only a professional step forward, but also a clear demonstration of the high technical mastery of the medical team at the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital in particular and the medical team of Quang Ninh province in general.

Dr. Tran Anh Cuong, Director of the Hospital, shared: "Since implementing specialized techniques in organ transplantation for patients, our greatest wish has been to make kidney transplantation a routine procedure to serve the people in the province and we have made efforts to do so and have achieved good results."

Previously, kidney transplantation was a specialized technique only available at end-line hospitals in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City; but now, thanks to thorough investment in facilities, human resources and technology transfer, the medical team in Quang Ninh is gradually catching up with the modern medical achievements of the whole country.

Up to now, Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is the first provincial hospital in the country to successfully perform the technique of removing multiple organs from a brain-dead donor, and the first kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor. The hospital is also the first unit in Quang Ninh province to perform the technique of removing and transplanting kidneys from living donors. This affirms that Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is a pioneer in the field of organ transplantation in Quang Ninh province.

Along with the success in kidney transplant implementation of Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, in recent times, provincial hospitals in Quang Ninh have also successfully performed many difficult, specialized, and modern techniques in examining and treating patients.

The implementation of many difficult and specialized techniques has affirmed the professional level of the medical team, doctors, as well as the modern medical equipment of Quang Ninh. The successful implementation of the kidney transplant will be an important premise for the Quang Ninh health sector to continue researching and implementing more advanced techniques, expanding the scope of implementing other organ transplant techniques such as heart, liver, lung transplants, etc., bringing many treatment opportunities for patients; helping people in the province and the region to benefit from specialized medical techniques, improving the quality of medical examination and treatment right at the provincial level, significantly reducing treatment time and costs.

The success in the field of organ transplantation has affirmed the solid steps of Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital on the journey to become the first provincial hospital in Quang Ninh province and the northeastern region to master specialized techniques in organ transplantation.
