Tien Luat (as Tien) and People's Artist Hong Van (as Tien's mother) in a scene.
The story begins when the body of a victim missing an arm, a leg and a head is found in the forest. Three morgue employees: Tien (Tien Luat), Thanh (Ngo Kien Huy), Trung (Dai Nghia) are tasked with bringing the body to the morgue for preservation, and coordinating with the police to investigate. From there, the trio encounters many mysterious and horrifying phenomena. In particular, Ms. Hong (Hong Van) - Tien's mentally ill mother - is constantly haunted by ghosts. Following the instructions of an acquaintance, Tien must find the missing body parts of the deceased to escape the ordeal. However, when the body parts are found, a horrifying secret is also revealed...
The common point of the 3 horror films by producer Nhat Trung is that they all exploit a profession related to corpses. From there, they lead the audience into a mysterious story. The work of the characters in "Finding the body: Headless Ghost" is told in a gentle way, with more humorous details than the previous 2 films "Ma da" and "Quy nhap trang". The three actors Tien Luat - Ngo Kien Huy - Dai Nghia juggle well, creating entertaining laughter for the film. However, in terms of quality and content, the film is a regrettable step backwards.
The film opens with a forced and somewhat exaggerated ghost scene that makes viewers uncomfortable. Poor makeup and special effects make many scenes fake and stiff; the scare scenes are old and unimpressive. The film spends too much time on unnecessary scare scenes, some situations are long and drawn out while the inserted situations are not valuable and unclear enough to create surprises at the last minute. The film has a good idea, but due to the unreasonable arrangement, the characters' psychology and actions are not convincing.
The message about mother-child love is deeply explored with the love and attachment between mother and daughter Hong and Tien, sometimes touching the audience. However, the main message about the girl's death and the price to pay for crimes is not conveyed skillfully, easily leading to misunderstandings.
The highlight of the film is the performance of People's Artist Hong Van in the role of an unfortunate mother, not sane but wholeheartedly loving and protecting her child. The two opposing personalities of the character, sometimes sane, sometimes crazy, and the suffering, torment, and fear are fully and emotionally portrayed by the actress.
Although the quality is not high, one of the favorable factors that helped “Find the body: Headless Ghost” achieve high revenue is that it was released at a time when there were no new films directly competing. However, during the upcoming April 30 holiday, with two Vietnamese films predicted to be blockbusters, “Flip side 8: Vong tay nang” and “Tham tu Kien” being released at the same time, perhaps this work will not be able to stay in theaters for long.
