Launching the Project for Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality Rice Cultivation

The goal by 2025 is to strive for a cultivated area of ​​high-quality rice in the whole province of 38,500 hectares, with 78 cooperatives and farmer organizations participating.

On May 22, at the People's Committee of Long Duc commune, Long Phu district (Soc Trang), the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang organized the launching ceremony of the Project on Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Cultivation Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 in Soc Trang province.

Hung Loi Agricultural Cooperative, Long Duc Commune, Long Phu District, with an area of ​​50 hectares, is the cooperative selected to start the pilot implementation.

Soc Trang is one of five provinces selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to pilot the Project. According to the plan of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang, the project will be implemented in 9 districts, towns and cities growing rice in the province. The goal by 2025 is to strive for the cultivated area of ​​high-quality rice in the whole province to be 38,500 hectares, with 78 cooperatives and farmer organizations participating; by 2030, the area will reach 72,000 hectares, with over 100 cooperatives and farmer organizations participating.

The project will be implemented in the districts of My Xuyen, Thanh Tri, My Tu, Ke Sach, Long Phu, Chau Thanh, Tran De, Nga Nam town and Soc Trang city. The project is an opportunity for the province's agricultural sector to continue to develop, and for farmers, it is an opportunity to access new, sustainable farming methods.

The project will carry out the planning of concentrated rice production areas, located in the planning area for specialized rice cultivation until 2030, with a vision to 2050 of the province, ensuring sufficient conditions to produce at least 2 rice crops/year or be able to produce 2 rice crops with intercropping or rotation of vegetables and aquatic products to ensure the criteria for building high-quality rice areas according to the project. Review, apply, and complete technical packages to ensure sustainable development criteria; apply technical packages on sustainable rice cultivation, emission reduction and climate change adaptation towards the credit market...

Soc Trang's agricultural sector also promotes the application of the "alternating flooding and drying" irrigation process, reducing the amount of seeds sown is the key to reducing fertilizer, reducing pesticides and reducing carbon emissions in rice cultivation; promoting the application of field mechanization, applying advanced science and technology, forming a sustainable production and consumption chain, contributing to the successful implementation of the Project...
