The "Music" of the Forest

Việt NamViệt Nam11/03/2024

On a sunny summer day, a small ferry across the Dong Nai River took me to Cat Tien National Park, a precious forest in the Southeast region of Vietnam. This is one of the few nature reserves in our country where visitors can observe wildlife in their natural habitat, including species of birds and animals listed in the Red Book of endangered species.

Cat Tien National Park spans five districts: Tan Phu and Vinh Cuu (Dong Nai province), Bao Loc (Lam Dong province), and Bu Dang (Binh Phuoc province). The part of the forest located in Dong Nai province is often called Southern Cat Tien and attracts the most visitors. To explore Cat Tien National Park, you can choose from dozens of different tours, day trips or multi-day tours, cycling or trekking, camping along the Dong Nai River, or spending the night in Bau Sau. The dry season here is from December to May, with the ideal time for tourism being around the end of April and the beginning of May, when butterflies thrive and the Cat Tien acacia trees are in full bloom.

The heat seemed to vanish the moment I stepped under the lush, verdant canopy. Renting a bicycle and spending an afternoon following the trail, I admired the forest's famous giant trees: a 400-year-old pine, a 700-year-old rosewood tree, a five-branched crape myrtle, and a six-trunk banyan tree. But perhaps the most powerful impression of the trip was the early morning "forest bathing" the following day, when I was fortunate enough to be accompanied by some wildlife and bird experts. Amidst the verdant surroundings, the gibbons' calls to greet the new day rang out like songs, while the monkeys' calls to each other sounded even more boisterous. Wild chickens crowed loudly, and birds chirped and sang, echoing through the layers of the forest canopy: rocket birds, bluebirds, orioles, warblers, teal birds, and hornbills. Occasionally, this symphony was punctuated by the buzzing of cicadas, the chirping of strange insects, and the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. If I stop, remain silent, and listen more carefully, I can even hear the gentle murmur of a stream or waterfall very close by. All these different sounds combine to form a "symphony" of the forest, so pleasant to listen to and brimming with life. That melody cannot be recorded or copied, but it will remain in my mind for a long time, reminding me of my fascinating adventure in the forest.
