DTO - The historic April of 1975 has gone down in history as the end of the long resistance war and the unification of the country. For the children of Dong Thap , especially the veterans of Chau Thanh district, the memories of those heroic days are still intact and vivid as if it were just yesterday...

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang - The resilient soldier

In a charity house nestled by a peaceful river, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (born in 1951), whom his relatives and neighbors affectionately call Hai Quang, slowly tells about the years of arduous fighting. His eyes shine with determination, but he cannot hide the sadness when remembering his fallen comrades. In 1968, Mr. Hai Quang joined the guerrillas of Binh Tien commune (now Tan Binh commune), in 1970 he joined the district local army and in 1972 he was assigned as a district platoon cadre to participate in the "Red Summer" campaign.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang - Hai Quang (left cover) tells about the arduous but proud years of fighting of a revolutionary soldier.

“That day, despite the extremely fierce fighting situation, our morale was very high. Everyone wanted to liberate our district and unify the country. Hardship and deprivation did not make us waver. Enemy bombs and bullets made our fighting spirit even stronger” - Mr. Hai Quang’s voice was deep and warm, carrying the echoes of the years of war.

From 1970 to 1975, in 24 large and small battles to liberate Duc Ton district (today's Chau Thanh district), he participated and remembered most the battle of 4 forts: Phong Hoa, Binh Tien, Ca Hac, Vam Kinh. Mr. Hai Quang said that in that battle, the enemy used very fierce firepower, they also used the strategy of separating the people to make it easier to control. In that situation, the District Party Committee directed the implementation of the strategy of dividing the force into 2-3 comrades to go to the area or fight among the people. When the enemy attacked the base, our forces from the people poured out to counterattack and destroy, collect guns, pliers, wrenches used to cut through the barbed wire fence to destroy the enemy fort.

At the Paris Agreement (1973), we signed the agreement but the other side did not comply. Our movement received international support and the people took advantage of the victory to advance, and Chau Thanh district liberated the defense lines we had built.

By April 30, 1975, the unit had grown to about 30 soldiers (initially only 5-10 people), directly attacking Te Xa. Under the command of comrade Bui Cong Hieu (Tu Chong), the enemy forces stubbornly decided to hold An Phu Thuan Post and not surrender. At around 11:00 a.m. the same day, they heard that President Duong Van Minh had surrendered. After many efforts to reconcile and fight, by the evening of April 30, the An Phu Thuan Post forces retreated, suffering many casualties. From then on, An Phu Thuan Post and Chau Thanh district were completely liberated.

Half a century has passed, but the memories of those historic April days still live forever in the heart of Veteran Nguyen Van Quang. They are memories of passionate patriotism, of courageous fighting spirit, of the noble sacrifice of an entire nation to regain independence, freedom and unity. Those memories will forever be a source of pride and a priceless lesson for future generations.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Ba Thanh's eyes were filled with sadness when he remembered his comrades.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - A resilient military medic on the front line

Returning to the “V-shaped area” (Hoa Tan commune) - a hot front during the anti-American resistance war in Chau Thanh, we visited the house of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Ba Thanh) - a military medic who joined the district's local army. Mr. Ba joined the guerrillas in 1970; in 1972, he joined the district's local army and was sent to study nursing. After this course, he continued to join the district's local army company, also doing logistics work, and the company until the liberation of Duc Ton district (present-day Chau Thanh district). "I studied nursing but mainly participated in combat work because the district army was small at that time" - Mr. Ba recalled.

The battle at An Phu Thuan Post (1973) was the fiercest and most deadly campaign in his memory. Two attack points were deployed, one was led by him to attack the riverside embankment, the other by two other comrades. After completing the mission at the point he was in charge of, he ran to see the situation at the riverside embankment and was shocked to learn that his comrade - his cousin - had sacrificed himself in the ditch. "I went down to bring his body back, but when I was only 3-4 meters away, the enemy threw a grenade fiercely, almost losing my life. Finally, following the direction of the District Party Committee, my comrades and I retreated to the base, leaving the body of my brother - my comrade there because the base was destroyed by enemy bombs" - Mr. Ba said.

“Three days later, the guerrillas of An Phu Thuan commune came back to find his body and buried it on a mound in the field. After the South was completely liberated, he was taken to the provincial cemetery,” Mr. Ba’s eyes filled with sadness as he remembered his comrade.

After the country was reunified, Mr. Ba participated in a number of local activities, helping families with meritorious services and people in difficult circumstances with the veterans of Hoa Tan commune. In the memories of the soldiers of the past, Mr. Ba was not only a brave soldier but also a soldier who always loved and protected his comrades.

The stories of Mr. Nguyen Van Quang and Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh are just two of the countless emotional memories of the liberation day of the South by the children of Chau Thanh, Dong Thap. They were steadfast soldiers, loyal sons who contributed their blood and bones to regain independence and freedom for the nation. Although time has passed, the imprints of the great war of national defense are still deeply imprinted in their minds.
