Up to now, the total area of forest and unforested forest in Quang Tri province is over 841,000 hectares. Of which, special-use forest covers over 196,600 hectares, nearly 211,120 hectares of protective forest and nearly 433,460 hectares of production forest.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Head of Quang Tri Forest Protection Department, in recent times, forestry activities in the area have had both advantages and challenges. In particular, the implementation of the province merger and the organization of a two-level local government model has had a great impact on the organization and operation of forest protection units.

After a short time, the forest ranger force was strengthened and soon deployed tasks, strengthening forest protection and development in the area.

"With the close attention and direction of the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment, after more than 4 months of operation, the Quang Tri forest rangers have achieved many remarkable results," said Mr. Nguyen Van Long.

Based on the implementation of the tasks, the Department and its subordinate units continue to implement the regulations and plans for inter-sectoral coordination between the forest rangers, the police, the military , and the border guards in the management and protection of forests that have been signed. Strengthen the inspection and supervision of law enforcement by forest owners, agencies, organizations, and individuals involved in forestry activities.

“The most important thing is that the force maintains inspection, patrols and controls of forest products and wildlife in the areas, closely monitors sawmills, processing and trading forest products, and facilities that breed wild animals,” said Mr. Long.

According to Mr. Long, the units under the Department identify key areas and forests at high risk of encroachment to have plans to inspect, sweep, and block them to promptly detect and prevent.

At the same time, strictly handle violations to prevent the formation of hot spots of deforestation, illegal exploitation, buying, selling, and transporting of forest products.

With efforts in the task of protecting and developing forests, just a short time after the two-level government came into operation, Quang Tri forest rangers discovered and recorded 17 violations; confiscated over 16 cubic meters of wood of various types; and paid over 227 million VND to the state budget.

It is noteworthy that in Quang Tri province, activities related to forestry violations have decreased significantly compared to the same period last year.

Statistics show that in the two provinces of Quang Tri and Quang Binh (old), in the first 6 months of the year, 75 cases were detected and handled (a decrease of more than 47% compared to the same period in 2024), confiscating over 75 m3 of wood of all kinds (a decrease of more than 52% compared to the same period in 2024).

"This reality shows that the forest rangers have been proactive in all areas to minimize forest encroachment and reduce actions that negatively affect forest development," said Mr. Nguyen Van Long.

After being established, Kim Ngan Forest Protection Department (Quang Tri Forest Protection Department) took on the responsibility of "guarding" over 86,000 hectares of forest in the mountainous area of Le Thuy district (old), including over 60,000 hectares of natural forest.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Que, Head of Kim Ngan Forest Protection Department, the unit currently has 17 staff (including contract workers), deployed at 2 checkpoints and 3 Forest Protection stations.

“Despite the limited manpower, the strengthening and maintenance of checkpoints and stations is always considered important. That is also the motto of “protecting the forest from the roots” of the unit and the forest rangers. Thanks to that, we always have a firm grasp of changes in the forest to have timely handling plans,” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Que added.

Eo Bu - Chut Mut forest protection post is the farthest point, nearly 70 km from Kim Ngan Forest Protection Department headquarters. Although life is still difficult and arduous, the coordinated force of forest rangers and Khe Giua Forestry Branch (under Long Dai Industrial Forestry Company Limited) always sticks to the area, organizing patrols to protect the forest.

Mr. Le Manh Cuong, a forest ranger on duty at the checkpoint, said that the force at the checkpoint regularly patrols and controls the forest. “On each patrol, we have to sleep overnight in the middle of the forest, sometimes through rain and floods. In difficult times, we still encourage and support each other to do our assigned tasks well,” Mr. Cuong shared.
