Thang Newspaper - where journalist Ly Van Sau's journalism career began

In mid-April 1946, Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee held an expanded conference in Dai Dien Dong village (Dien Dien commune, Dien Khanh district) and issued a resolution on publishing a newspaper of the provincial Party Committee, named Bao Thang. The name of the newspaper expressed the determination to defeat all invaders, the revolutionary spirit of the army and people of Khanh Hoa at that time. "No one doubted that in this resistance war, we would definitely win, and if we named the newspaper "Nhat Thang" it would be too long, so in the end we chose Thang" (quoted from Mr. Nguyen Minh Vy in the book We Make Khanh Hoa Newspaper). After a year of preparation, on April 26, 1947, Bao Thang published its first issue in Hon Du war zone (Khanh Vinh district). At first, the team working on Bao Thang had only 5 people: Mr. Nguyen Minh Vy - former Chairman of the Administrative Resistance Committee of Khanh Hoa province, Editor-in-Chief of Bao Thang; Mr. Ly Van Sau - responsible for the content and considered the editor-in-chief of Thang Newspaper; Messrs. Nguyen Xuan Am, Le Han, Huynh Than responsible for layout, printing, and storage of materials for Thang Newspaper. A few months after the first issue was published, Thang Newspaper was supplemented with Messrs. Vo Van Sung and Nguyen Sung.

As the content manager for Bao Thang, Mr. Ly Van Sau took the first steps on the path to becoming a great journalist of the country. In the early days of working for Bao Thang, journalist Ly Van Sau collected information from Vietnamese, English, French radio stations and from local reports to write and report. At the same time, he was also the person who directly edited the news and articles of others. Later, when talking about those unforgettable days, journalist Ly Van Sau still kept beautiful memories for himself: “To make Bao Thang, in addition to the efforts of the journalism team, there was also the effort of compatriots who loved the revolution. The stone stele was taken from Dien Khanh and carried up the mountain; white paper, printing ink and printing rollers were purchased and sent up by establishments in Nha Trang city. The paper had to be bought in parts, not in large quantities at once; many women had to tie the paper to their thighs and use rope to pass through guard posts without being detected by the enemy. Gasoline was collected and put in bamboo tubes and carried up to the war zone to run the generator to collect news for the newspaper… The printed newspaper was then transported back to the districts and Nha Trang. The birth of Bao Thang was a great effort, not by one or a group of people, but by dozens, hundreds of people with and without names, the result of a sophisticated and effective organizational system, from the war zone to the countryside, to the city and vice versa. again…” (quoted from journalist Ly Van Sau in the book We Work for Khanh Hoa Newspaper).

On November 1, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Journalists Association will organize a discussion and exhibition on the theme: Journalist and diplomat Ly Van Sau - A loyal heart. This is an activity towards the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025); the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Journalists Association (April 21, 1950 - April 21, 2025) and the 100th anniversary of the birth of journalist and diplomat Ly Van Sau (November 5, 1924 - November 5, 2024). The discussion is an opportunity to pay tribute to the contributions and dedication of journalist and diplomat Ly Van Sau - a talented, enthusiastic, virtuous and emotional person.

Immediately after the newspaper Thang was born, it received the love, acceptance and protection of all classes of people in the whole province. The spiritual and material encouragement of people from urban to rural areas encouraged the people of Thang Newspaper so that from issue to issue, journalist Ly Van Sau and his "team" diligently brought useful information, to encourage patriotism, strengthen people's belief in the Party, in Uncle Ho and their determination to fight against French colonialism. Thanks to their contributions to the newspaper Thang, journalist Ly Van Sau and two men Huynh Than and Le Han were considered by the organization to become official party members before the end of their probationary period. For Mr. Ly Van Sau, this was a special reward that the organization gave him in his journey on the revolutionary path. It can be seen that journalist Ly Van Sau was a great contributor to the formation of Thang Newspaper - the predecessor of Khanh Hoa Newspaper today. It was also from Bao Thang that the portrait of a journalist named Ly Van Sau, who was enthusiastic and loved his job, began to be created. After the signing ceremony, as soon as he stepped out of the meeting room, Mr. Nguyen Minh Vy hugged Mr. Ly Van Sau and Mr. Vo Van Sung and said: "The three of us from Khanh Hoa", meaning that all three people had worked together in the revolutionary base area of Khanh Hoa province, and now met again on this happy day of the country. Later, when recounting the above story, Mr. Vo Van Sung said: "This reunion was not only of the three Khanh Hoa brothers meeting each other, but also of three former Thang Newspaper reporters meeting in the city of light."

When writing this article, we met journalist Luong Kien Dinh - former Editor-in-Chief of Khanh Hoa Newspaper, who had met Mr. Nguyen Minh Vy, Ly Van Sau, Vo Van Sung and he said: “For me, journalist Ly Van Sau left an impression of being a person who loved his job very much, always interested in the development of the newspaper. Every time we had the opportunity to go to Hanoi, we visited journalist Ly Van Sau to hear him tell his memories of the unforgettable years of working as a journalist in the Hon Du war zone and every time he was very excited to tell the stories as if it were yesterday. Later, when we sent Khanh Hoa Newspaper to journalist Ly Van Sau, he always read it very carefully, meticulously, with encouragement, as well as regularly contributed good ideas to improve and enhance the quality of the newspaper.
